Renovation story: Years ago we had a big family Labor Day Weekend project drywalling and painting our garage… added some outlets too. On the last evening, my husband was finishing up some painting around the electrical box (located in garage). I heard a CRASH!!, and then all the lights in the house went out. I was in a bit of panic worried he’d been electrocuted or something. Turns out he had taken off he faceplate to do a better paint job… and accidentally dropped it when reinstalling. As it fell, it turned off the main power input to the house. Phew, easy fix… and hubby was unharmed.

I had a thought while cruising past this thread today…the median price of a home in our zip code is $180k - so of course on a ā€œmedianā€ house, a remodel of a kitchen better not cost $150! That $180K is probably a starter/small family home- say 3 beds 1.5 baths, standard lot.

As in all things in life - and on CC - it’s all relative!!!

Several folks in our neighborhood have done kitchens…somewhere in the $50,000 range. New counters, cabinets, lights, and all new appliances…and repainted.

We just got our cabinets painted…that worked for us! We already had granite we liked, and wood floors we liked. Appliance have been replace in rotation.

In our first house, that $18 can of off-white paint for the dark, glossy cabinets gave us the biggest bag for the buck on renovation $ (though these days we’d likely hire out for the work). The new countertop and flooring helped too, but it was the cabinets that wowed us.

I wish our cabinets were wood! Would repaint them in a heartbeat.

H’s dad was an electrician, as were his uncle, GF and great uncles. Had no desire to learn any of it.

My dad drafted me to help with lots of projects, so I’m a good assistant, but left teaching actual skills to my brothers.

Not so ironically, all three of us girls became very handy and crafty. My youngest sister and her H have redone their entire house. I keep offering to pay them DC market rates to come help with our desperately needed bathroom reno, but for some reason they’d rather hang out with their four grandsons and their sports events.
