<p>You are 18 years old and you don’t <em>believe</em> in mental illness unless it can be proven that there is a genetic disposition for someone to act that way. How nice of you to contribute on the parents forum. </p>
<p>Seriously though, the point of bringing up mental illness is not to defer blame, but to encourage the consultation of competent mental health professionals in dealing with the underlying issues in order to correct them and achieve a good outcome for all parties. </p>
