@shannonista: what school is your top choice if you don’t mind me asking?

Thanks!

I know this is ridiculously late, but are there places still accepting applications?

Pertaining to Thank-you’s

I only sent thank-you’s to the Dean of admissions, and to the Administrative people who did all my scheduling.

I thanked the interviewers very sincerely in person for taking time out of their schedules to accommodate me. I felt that an email stating the same would be painfully redundant especially given the time frame. I was told they would have a decision early this week, and that was last Thursday! Two identical thank-you’s in less than a week, to me, would feel contrived. If I had a little more time, I would have sent them another nice note, but in this instance, I just felt it would be too much, too soon. I made it very clear during the interviews that they are where I would like to be!

also, my group was really small, and I was the only candidate they saw, because I was a rescheduled interview. If I was trying to stand out in a larger group, I would have been more aggressive with thank you notes.

What exactly are you looking to study in grad school?
You could plan on working in a lab for a year and reapply for the Fall of 2011.
There are international schools that are still accepting applications.
Applications are still open to these domestic schools:

scout mom: thanks for the info! i am interested in compbio/bioinformatics.

ToTeMo, I don’t know your stats/background, but if you applied straight out of undergrad, the best thing you can do, rather than find a last minute place to apply, is to look for research jobs. Large research universities with a lot of funding often hire people, as do research institutes. Computational biology is a hot field, and so I would think that, with a strong research background, you’d have a good chance next year.

The Universtity of Texas Medical Branch accepts apps on a rolling basis through spring. It is a bit late to start applications, but you could at least try…the worst is you get rejected and lose a small app fee. In that case, strengthen your chances and get experience for the next year! If this is really what you want to do and feel you are a qualified applicant, just try a few schools and see what happens. Best of luck!

One of my good friends worked at Harvard for a year out of undergrad and he loved it! He then went on to Columbia for his PhD. He knew that coming from our undergrad wasn’t strong for applications, and the Harvard year really improved his portfolio.

i feel relieved to be done with interviews and have chosen a school ill attending! yay!

congrats hamster09…if you don’t mind me asking, where are you headed?

finished up interviews myself this past weekend and have now been accepted to all of the schools that I interviewed @…still don’t have a great idea of where i’ll be in the fall yet though.

That must be a great feeling, hamster09. I still don’t have any acceptances yet so I just wish I could fast forward to next month. All this waiting is really stressing me out.

@fredhutch: Congrats! I saw from your previous posts that you got into some good schools - it must be a really tough decision.

i applied to 10 schools and interviewed only at 4 schools (i declined 1 a week before). it gets really tiring after awhile not to mention the weather issues and such which affect the traveling.

hang in there you guys! its almost over and your acceptances should be rolling in!
i can now concentrate on graduating. phew!

I was throughly confused to see 2 back to back posts with a similar ID, one having acceptances and one still pending. It took me a while to find out that “fredhutch” did not post 2 serial posts. :)

For those completed interviews: Is it wise to bring up the topic of funding issues at the interview? (such as: is full funding guaranteed? How do you choose funding recipients?) Since I mentioned that I was eligible for a partial scholarship at my home country (long story:it brings restraints with it, so I’m debating whether to take it or not) in my CV.

Just wanted to know if I should actively discuss this, or should wait till the formal acceptance.

I have my interview weekends coming up, very nervous and excited!

–
Applied: 13 schools
Rejected: 8 of them (GSK and Mayo are what hurt most)
Interviews: Scripps-biology track, UCLA ACCESS
accepted: still none

we have been requested to send ~5 ppt slides that “can include research that you have done and that you are interested in to assist as a visual aid (you can estimate 15-20 minutes)” has anyone else had to do something like this? i am really nervous about it, because it seems like an open opportunity to be judged on the quality of our previous work

That’s an odd request. Well, it sounds as if it’s optional (maybe you don’t need a visual aid to describe your research - I certainly don’t), or you can make slides just of your research interests.

that actually sounds really cool…

Invitation to Emory IMP for March 5th!

This is the best school that my husband has interviewed at out of all the schools we applied to. Finally a possible good match for us both! I am very excited!

Accepted:Vanderbilt, Duke, MCG
Waiting to hear: Northwestern, U Penn, Drexel
Interview: U Chicago, St. Louis University, Emory
Rejected: Wash U
Waiting: UNC Chapel Hill (assuming rejection)

that sounds totally stressful! (re the ppt slide presentation) - good luck! it sounds like a great opportunity, but also stressful.

@ToTeMo
I had to do that too. But it was my master’s dissertation work presentation (which I had presented before, in my defense - so longer, but probably “easier”). It was much less stressful than I thought it would be. It was actually fun. It was the PI (who is a potential advisor) and her students who watched it. It turned out great!!
So don’t worry, good luck!

@ceclarlinetlo

How did you hear from Emory? Email or Postal mail or Phone? When is the interview?

I have applied to the IMP also.

I had emailed them about my application. They said a decision hasn’t been made.

Tired of waiting :(
