Hi caulobacter, I’ve sent you PM. I would appreciate any advice or information. Thanks!

Anyone who heard from North Carolina State Univ. (NCSU)- Physiology PhD program ?
Please share your information about this graduate program’s 2010 acceptance.
I did not hear from them until now about my application.

@Molly3785 kinda feels nice there are people out there who are in the same position as me :). It sucks to wait though…especially its almost apr 15…

hey I wanna ask people on CC that Ive been accepted to a program however the prof I really wanted to work with the lab is full and Im left with another lab that Im kinda not really interested in. Ive been waitlisted at all other schools Ive interviewed and waiting for admission from one school ive interviewed. So the PI at this school I got accepted is starting to ask me if I made a decision but I really wanna wait till apr 15 to see if i can get removed from the waitlist or get accepted to the school Im waiting for before I can make a decision. What do u guys say in this kinda situation.
Im feeling so pressured now…

I sent you a pm. Any advice would be much appreciated.

choijae - If you want to respond, tell them that you’re still weighing your options, but you’ll let them know as soon as you’ve made up your mind or by April 15. That way you don’t come out and say you’re waiting for other schools, as that lets them know you’re not too excited about attending their program. Not that that matters too much, but it is a little more tactful. While I wouldn’t think going to a program where your main research interests won’t be served is usually the best idea, it is true that outside funding for you, more funding for the lab, and interdisciplinary projects between your the full lab and lab with room could all get you back to doing what you want to do.

Ok for some very strange reason I can’t send PM’s but I can receive PM’s. Can you pm me your email?

@Choijae

Im in the same boat as you, Im an international student and my top choice is making me wait because of funding issues…

I tried to ask for a timeline for the decisions and this was what I got

" Even if the admissions committee makes recommendations regarding specific candidates, I cannot offer positions until we are told that funds are in hand to support those positions."

it looks bleak :(

@joshheng

wow i thought that schools not having the funds was just another meaning for a rejection but it seems they really dont have the funds. It’s almost apr 15 and I wonder when they’ll get the funding. I feel as some of the americans reject the offer and open up spaces is when internationals have a chance to get in.
It sucks how the school thinks ur a good fit for the program but they need to secure the funds to let u in. I hope they can get that fund fast!!!:(

Quick question–is it possible to receive a one-your deferment of your admission into a program? I’ve been offered a one-year research internship position, and am debating between getting my Ph.D and a MD/Ph.d, but hate to completely give up my spot and reapply next year if I do decide on the Ph.D alone.

coolcats24:

Yes it is possible but you have to discuss this with your specific program.

The National Science Foundation fellowship results recently went out. Schools with awardees can take more students off the waitlist.

do schools get notified or does the students get notified and tell the schools?

this whole waitlist is making me sleepless ugh…

Boyfriend was between between UTSW, CU Boulder, UCLA, Mount Sinai, and Northwestern IBiS.

Final decision: Mount Sinai.

NSF awarded a lot of fellowships this cycle, a ~60% increase over last year. Probably has something to do with stimulus funding. Awards were announced this past Tuesday morning. As the list was made public, all universities can access the list of awardees. At least, I was told that the financial aid office here will compare the list of awardees to the list of current and prospective students. By my rough estimate, it seems like 5-15% per class in top tier programs have been awarded an NSF fellowship, so that’s a few spots on training grants that have opened up.

And congratulations to anyone on these boards that received an NSF fellowship!

i’ve finally decided! i’m going to uchicago in the fall. congratulations to everyone and good luck on all your future endeavors as graduate students.

I haven’t looked at this in a while so I figured I’d post. I guess this is probably more helpful for people applying in 2011 at this point.

Experience: Summer internship at UCSD and Harvard. Two years as a tech in a very high profile lab at Harvard Medical School. Two publications in good journals (not Nature or Science, but good journals), and a third manuscript prepared.

Applied: A lot of places
Interviews: Tufts ISP, Mount Sinai, Georgetown, UMass Med, George Washington, Brandeis, Emory (declined).
Rejected pre-interview: Harvard BBS, MIT, Yale, Columbia, BC, Case Western (never heard from Case)
Rejected after interview: Tufts, GW (never heard from GW after the interview)
Waitlisted: Northeastern
Accepted: UMass, Mount Sinai, Georgetown, Brandeis

Decision: UMass

For anyone applying to Tufts, I got the impression that they want you to accept before they actually offer. I was asked 3 different times how interested I was, and was also asked if Tufts was my first choice. I never said it was my first choice, just that I was very interested, and ended up getting rejected.

My GPA is obviously really low. I could have worked harder in college. I worked my tail off in my research jobs, and it paid off. It helps that I have a genuine interest in biology, and I’m sure it came through in my app. I hope this helps. Congrats to everyone.

Apr 15th almost here!!!

Hey what do you guys are gonna do if before apr 15th u havent heard back from schools yet?
Ive been accepted to a school but Im still waiting for one school and 2schools that ive been waitlisted.
Should i tell the school ive been accepted to give an extension or should i just accept the offer and later on if i get admitted to another school reject the offer…
