2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Hi ! I am an international applicant, desperately waiting for grad school answers. Do you know if there is a special procedure for international student and if it is normal that it takes more time ?

Also, for those who have received an interview invitation, is there any change on the web page of your application ?

Thank you guys !

Anyone going to Michigan this coming weekend?

This is my first interview and I’m nervous!

I’m also from Florida and not too excited about the weather (our low is a little higher than the high temp in MI =( ). Also, I’m not sure what to do about changing shoes to walk around and to interviews. I have to wear high heals with my slacks, but I can’t walk between buildings with them. How do I get around this?

Hmmm…there are a few options.

You could wear boots and bring the heels along with you for the interview (in NY it’s very common to see women changing on benches from boots into heels and vice versa, so I don’t see why that wouldn’t be ok there). The only problem is that then you have to carry the boots with you.

You could rough it and try to wear the heels outside, which might not be an issue if there’s not a ton of snow on the ground. I wear heels to work in NYC when it has snowed recently, and as long as it isn’t too icy it’s usually fine.

Or you could try and look for another shoe option that goes with your pants but isn’t a heel.

Personally, I’d just wear the heels, unless they get a huge amount of snow overnight.

@MicroAndCellSci

Hey there, I’ll be at the Michigan PIBS this weekend. I hope the weather will play nice while we were there :)

Micro,
Many years ago this happened to me. I’d suggest bringing a tote back to carry shoes in. If necessary, tuck pants into boots. It can be a start of conversation to discuss change in weather. Honestly, if you look neat, that is the focus.

Phirah, check airlines schedule, and if there is an earlier flight, try to get it. Airlines charge to move up a flight, but often waive the fee is there is a snow storm predicted.

Last year my son got caught in the Phila airport 3x! On U put him up in a hotel overnight, and he caught an early train the next morning. Be sure to carry a credit card with you.

Agreed.

Just as a warning, it seems that the airlines are much more eager than they used to be to cancel flights, even in advance of a snowstorm. I got stuck in Ohio before the Christmas storm, although my flight would have put me into Boston before the snow actually started, and the same happened to my husband trying to get home from a business trip before the storm a few weeks ago. So my advice would be to try to get out well in advance of the predicted start of the storm.

It’s true, Logan has been canceling flights in advance lately with the last few storms. I called United this morning, and they said once a travel advisory is out (which could be as early as tomorrow evening), I can call and they will put me on a flight on Tuesday for no additional charge. I really don’t want to chance “trying” to get out on Wednesday or early Thursday… I don’t want to hop off a 6 hour flight and run to my interview, haha. So anyways, it looks like it should work out for me.

Any one else having this issue (trying to fly out of Boston on Wednesday)… I may suggest calling the airline tomorrow. I am also going to call Berkeley’s travel agent that booked my ticket for me.

Just learned that there was another interview weekend at JHU (Jan 28 instead of Feb 11), which would have solved all of my scheduling conflicts. Now I may not get to interview at UPenn because I didn’t know there were multiple weekends for JHU.

Why don’t schools tell you all the weekends available? This is frustrating, and it’s too late for me to change anything.

Most of the biomed research buildings here are connected, except for two or three. They are not very far from each other either. Though it might still be difficult to walk in the snow with heels, it shouldnt be impossible.

Good luck!!!

What program are you interviewing with?

Crap now its 50% chance of snow on Thursday, I hope this all gets sorted out… wouldn’t make sense for me to fly out on Tuesday for a Friday interview!

I’m supposed to be flying out on Thursday too, crap. I just want this new storm to go away.

@MicroAndCellSci

I’m in the same boat as you – I’m going to be interviewing in Michigan the weekend after next, and I was just wondering what to do about the slacks & heels situation. I’d be curious to hear what option you choose and how it works out for you. I don’t really have the funds to buy any new boots, so will likely wing it with the heels and hope I don’t slip (a very good possibility, since one of my interviewers is located several buildings away from the main research buildings – dunno how I’m going to get there and back in the allotted 15-min time period, especially in heels!)

Most of you guys are applying to top-tier programs, good luck and congrats on the interview invites. I am wondering if anyone has heard from these programs I have applied to. Here are my stats, what do you think my chances of an interview invite?

Master’s in Biology from U of Georgia branch school g.p.a. 3.2
GRE V(520) Q(750) W(4)
2.5 years TA
1 publication in Current Biology (3rd author) one in preparation (1st author)
4 strong letters of recomendation
7 years research experinece: 2-Brandeis, 2-Joslin Diabetes Center, 3-Master’s work
Fairly strong but fairly broad SOP, I really emphasized my research experience

I’d appreciate any comments. Good luck with your applications!

Then maybe you could see if you could switch to a late Thursday or early Friday flight? The problem is going to be that if your original flight gets canceled, whether due to actual weather or to airline overcautiousness, it’s going to be tough to get on the next flights out because everybody else whose flights were canceled is going to be in the same boat.

To MicroAndCellSci, Eyesonly6587, and anybody else who’s going to be interviewing at UMich PiBS this coming weekend (or the February date), I’m a first-year PiBS neuro student. I’ll be participating in the interview weekends, but if you have any questions feel free to PM me for my contact information.

If I don’t talk to you before then, good luck and I hope you have a good stay here in Ann Arbor!

Ya I am also about done with this storm :frowning: As if grad school interviews weren’t already stressful enough haha. Personally, I am just trying to flying out early (i’m going from Boston to San Fran… so I can’t complain too much about a couple of extra days out there). I have a ton of personal/vacation time accrued, so that isn’t really a big deal. Where is everyone else trying to fly to?

@molliebatmit

The program starts early Friday, so I guess the only thing I can do is constantly monitor the weather and travel advisories… hmm something else to obsess over now? :)

@ngsfan
I have received an offer of admission with an IGERT fellowship from BU bioinformatics on January 14th through email. No news from BC Biology or Harvard Biostatistics. Last time I checked with BC, they said they weren’t going to start reviewing applications until the second week of January. I cannot find a way to check status online either - it just lists received documents :confused: I think I will start calling next week…

@MicroAndCellSci

I’m interviewing with Cancer Biology, and you??

@ Serric, so…how are the interviews like? lol
