2012 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Thought this might be helpful for everyone:

I talked with a professor at my last interview who was on the admissions committee and asked him what we’re supposed to say if we’re asked about other schools we’re interviewing at. Basically, he said you should just be honest if you’re asked as it can only help you if other schools are competing for you. Just be honest and humble about it. Obviously, don’t be arrogant about it. If you genuinely applied to schools you’re interested in, I don’t think you have anything to fear from this type of question.

So, what is going on with these dress code rules?

Walk into the hotel lobby of the first interview: everyone except me was in full on funeral attire (ok, business suits). Black suit, tie, dressy shirt…and leather planners?

My second interview is now saying “business/professional” which I think may mean there are a lot of suits again.

Here I was thinking my dress pants and button-down shirt was good enough. At least I got accepted to the first place despite my sartorial misstep (which I fully intend to make again because I hate suits and cannot tie a tie :P) I’m going to gain a reputation as a dress-code rebel if this keeps happening.

Ha – your group sounds a lot more formal than any that I saw interviewing. Sounds more like a med school interview than a grad school one. I think it’s really important to be comfortable, so wear what works for you. Good Luck!

hey all, im late to the party. ill spare you the boring details of my CV and get down to what everyone wants to hear: acceptance, rejection, interview

for some reason i got it in my head to apply to (mostly) prestigious programs so this list makes me feel a little ridiculous (as i wont get in) but here goes, to allay (minutely) the constant stress that we are all going through right now

so ive got 2 interviews, and 18 I dont knows. i didnt really apply too early to many of them so i guess im in the ‘people who applied last minute’ bin for at least half the schools, but i work at one of the schools and also took a grad class there so come on babyyy!!!

good luck to all

anybody wanna help a brother out and lemme know if they’ve heard from any of these guys?

ill keep updating that list as well the more i hear from anybody just to keep us all sane, which i can tell we are not. maybe just a going list of all uni’s applied to and how many got interviewed/rejected out of the total amount applied just so we know what weekends to give up once we know rocafella aint gonna come calling

tidbit of info i just gathered at lunch: Northwestern IGB will have all interview invites sent out feb 15 the latest and domestic admissions decisions done by march 15

I just talked to Rockefeller and they said that they are currently reviewing my application and that I would hear next week or the week after

so you’re saying there’s still a chance?

[Dumb and Dumber ‘There’s a Chance’ - YouTube](<a href=“Dumb and Dumber 'There's a Chance' - YouTube”>Dumb and Dumber 'There's a Chance' - YouTube)

hahaha

i guess i could go out and contact (bother) all the admissions committees. i think ill just wait it out and see what trickles in but thanks for the info.

i figure im too cheap to not interview, i can get myself there with a swipe of the metrocard!

Oh wow. Yeah for real, I didn’t think there was still a chance! That’s good to know… kind of like a bad break-up though. I had finally convinced myself I wasn’t getting in and everything would be ok, and now we’re back to being fwb or something… Rockefeller, I don’t want to get over you again!

ps do you think it reflects poorly on your application to contact the school and ask for the status? I really don’t want to bother those people. Then again, if I don’t contact them, does it seem like I don’t care?

I submitted my app the last day though. And they didn’t receive my transcripts until much later. I got an app complete email on Jan 9th.

The voices inside my head were also wondering how people’s interviews at Columbia (Integrated CMBS) went this past weekend?

@joelfc
UT Southwestern is still reviewing applications. Their admins tell me they are swamped with applications and organizing the interviews.

Hope that helps.

Correction to pumiliod’s post: *her

@ scripps people

did scripps tell you a specific program for your interviews? or just general interviewing

@Persephone2012, It was fun, but I thought the interviewers were very slightly tougher than at my last interview (UPenn).

@joelfc, What programs for columbia, weill cornell and upenn? I think Columbia and UPenn CAMB are done. Columbia Integrated I know for sure is done.

@ seniorspring

I have not heard anything from scripps since I told them I was coming, and there was nothing in the initial email describing interviews that specified my track (biology)

thanks guys for all the info.

@greenertea

columbia done already? application deadline was Jan 4th for department of biological sciences

[Introduction to Ph.D. Program](Biology)

upenn biomedical cell and molecular biology and weill cornell allied programs with micro immunology as second preference

@joelfc, Oh sorry, I thought you meant the med camps for Columbia. For Biological Sciences, probably not. That’s a pretty late deadline. For Medical Center, I’m pretty sure they’re done but their deadline was Dec 1.

I’m pretty sure UPenn is done for that program. They already had their first interview a couple weeks back, I’m pretty sure they’ll have finished scheduling for the next two. People always drop out though. Weill Cornell has sent out a lot but pretty recently, so if they’re not done there will still be people declining/cancelling. Hope that helps!

@greenertea

absolutely! thanks for all the info

@ joelfc

Does Columbia Biological sciences have interviews?
As per their website they don’t

Just got an acceptance package from Rockefeller! The ppl who posted about it before are quite right, it’s very thorough. And heavy…
