Reflection:
These decisions are either very very arbitrary or very very holistic. If the latter (which I hope it is), then certain things I was told didn’t matter, actually do matter a lot. What am I talking about? Anything that isn’t a tangible achievement. My objective statistics aren’t anything to write a book about. So they must REALLY consider the personal statement and other peculiarities that we probably don’t know about.

The best and only advice I can give is to treat your application honestly people. Mine was so simple. My personal statement was written in the last few days before the deadline, not out of laziness but because it doesn’t take much effort. If it is taking a lot of effort, I’d say you’re doing it wrong! I think they (the people who check the applications) can sense these things, and I’m sure they know when your essays are fake and/or formulaic. Think about what they’re asking and just answer it as real as you can. Don’t sell yourself out to drama even if everyone else is doing so. You’re not everyone else, that’s the whole point of the personal statement: to write about yourself. And few things are easier than that.

Don’t get paranoid. This board can be really useful for information, but it can damage you if you let it. Don’t believe everything people tell you.

Ahhh!

I logged onto my UC App to find my ID number to check Berkeley admissions decisions, and only just realized that I had made a mistake in grade reporting on the UC App (accidentally posted a higher grade than I received) and forgot to list a class I withdrew from. The mistakes are understandable, in that all of my grades were pretty much the same except for that one class, and the class I forgot to list was a class I took only for fun and was separated out from the other classes on my unofficial transcript.

I was admitted into Berkeley and other UCs.
Do you know if the admissions teams will be forgiving? I can’t believe that I had missed these mistakes, and have no idea how this could have happened as I had triple checked. I would still fit into the profile for a Berkeley admitted student, and my GPA is still in the upper percentile.

Thank you so much for your advice!

@sleepyballoons

Read your conditions page.

Mine reads:
Your admission to Berkeley will be cancelled without further notice if:

You do not satisfy all of the above conditions, or

Any information you submitted on your application for admission does not agree with official documentation.

I don’t know if “I forgot to mention a course I dropped” will fly. And I’d assume it depends on how big of a gaffe the grade reporting was. If it was more than two letter grades, they probably wouldn’t be too forgiving.

But this is just my speculation. Email your admissions officer, or call admissions and ask them.

Monergist-- The course I dropped was not a class necessary for any requirement (IGETC, major pre-reqs, etc.), and is more of a “Basketweaving” type of course. The gaffe in grade reporting was only one letter grade (B vs. A); I would have been proud to have listed my transcript as it is, and have no idea how this could have happened.

Thank you for your response. I would be surprised if this mistake weighs out my academic and other achievements…but you have painted an unforgiving and strict portrait of the system that has me worried. I hope this is taken as it is–a gaffe.

@fluxrad Congrats to you, too! It feels great, doesn’t it? I’m completely baffled by how lucky I am… Yesterday afternoon, I was sure that I was going to UCLA, now I have no idea what I should do! I feel like being accepted to Berkeley is such an honor, and I would be silly to not at least consider it. I think I’m going to go check out the campus in a couple of weeks before I make my final final decision lol. :)

[/ul]General Comments:

Wow! This is crazy!! Accepted to Berkeley with ZERO/NO prerequisites…

Hopefully my story will help someone out there:

I’m 28 years old. I was a horrible high school student, and I went to a state school in 2003 and did even worse. I dropped out of college to work a full-time job back in 2005, but after seeing how hard life was I decided to go back to school…lol.

Didn’t really expect this, as I was rejected by UCLA because I do not have any of the prerequisites to declare a philosophy major (I’m a business major at my community college, but I specified in my application that I wished to change to philosophy upon transferring). What’s even crazier is that the one philosophy class I did take last year, I had to drop since it ended up conflicting with my work schedule. While doing my application I would tell my best friend, “dude, I’m trying to declare a philosophy major with no philosophy classes and a big ‘W’ on my transcript for the one i did attempt! It’s not happening.” But he kept encouraging me to do it anyway.

I got a shred of hope when Berkeley contacted me in March asking me for additional information. They said that before they make their final decision they need me to answer some questions. I had posted my grades from the state school I attended back in 2003 on my UC application, and I guess they wanted to confirm that I was really that bad of a student back in the day…lol. I’m talkin’ ‘Ds’ and ‘Fs’ baby…haha. I thought, well, if they were going to reject me why ask any questions? Just reject me. So I held on to this hope for the following month.

Don’t give up guys! When I was rejected by UCLA, I was devastated and I thought Berkeley was definitely out of the question. UCLA’s rejection really hurt because it felt like I had been in community college for three and a half years, just to be rejected for not having three philosophy classes (I maintained a 4.0 for 80 units, and I just got my first ‘B’ last semester). But I resolved that if the UCs were going to reject me, I’d just stay at community college another semester and take as many philosophy classes as possible, and apply again in November to prove to them that I’m really dedicated to the philosophy program.

After being rejected by UCLA last week, my professors told me that the UCs might of thought I was one of those students trying to apply to one of the least applied to programs in order to switch majors after acceptance. But I think my application is clear that I really do want a degree in philosophy. Plus, there would be no point for me to apply to the philosophy program and then switch back to the business program (assuming they were thinking I knew the business programs were too competitive), when I could’ve just applied to the business school, seeing that I have a 4.0 in the business prerequisites.

I was angry with UCLA after my rejection because I thought to myself, why don’t they just look at the classes on my transcript and say, hey, we will not take you as a philosophy major since you don’t have any philosophy classes, but we will take you as an anthropology major since you have four of those classes… You know, something like that. Don’t they have that power? I guess not… Rather, I was sent a harsh letter that basically said screw you, and don’t try to appeal. But Berkeley just proved that admissions does have that sort of power.

Another thing, I think UCs most likely communicate with each other, and in order to give another applicant at UCLA a chance, they rejected me there, and took me at Berkeley.

Anyway, my story just goes to show that lack of prerequisites are possibly not the reason for rejection. When you have a thousand applicants, and all of them have a 3.5-4.0, good extracurricular activities, and great personal statements, and you can only pick 10, at some point you’re just going to have to reject very good applicants. I don’t think it’s arbitrary; I think they turn to hooks or what’s unique about you that will bring more diversity to the campus.

I was not accepted into any specific major program. Berkeley is simply saying that I can come to their school… AWESOME! All I have to do is file a petition to the philosophy department if I enroll. I’m going to contact my admissions officer and see if taking some philosophy classes at my community college this summer and fall will help me for my petition to the philosophy department in January 2013!

Okay, I’m finished…lol.

@Monergist
congrats on berkeley! by the way, it is my view that Berkeley and UCLA do not really communicate on the level you noted. Not at all. UCLA in my view, well i am certain in my case, does not read anything that you write down on your application and only look at stats and email any questions they have. which i think is fine, while Cal seems to scrutinize applications and reads everything with great care. it is wonderful that these schools are so different. and completely independent from each other.

UCLA stayed in touch with me during the admission process, and i heard nothing from Cal. not one peep. admitted to both schools with generous financial aid packages, but Cal gave me an extra grant and i will not even need loans. all that and i never heard a word from them since last november?! amazing. but i wrote it all down on my app. and they obviously read every word and had no questions for me.

however, i am equally certain that all of the other UC schools who admitted me used the ratings generated by UCLA and Cal and never even glanced at my application beyond checking prereqs (maybe!).

anyway, congratulations! UCLA and Cal are both superb schools!

@sleepyballoons

Just realized you might not have a conditions page.

Well, I would personally be forgiving for one letter grade. But if someone had missed it by two or more, I’d probably be a little skeptic.

And the other class being unrelated might help your case, also. It says on my messages to just report withdrawals immediately to my admissions officer.

The conditions from my page sound unforgiving and strict, but maybe it’s just one of those things you’re required to say… You know, you can’t just say on a professional application, “hey if you mess up, don’t worry about it.” lol.

It’s probably not going to affect you. Let us know. Maybe you can Google it and find some similar cases.
