I contacted a professor I talked to in the Fall who had a pretty positive response to my background. He said my application is still being considered and to take it as good news. I would assume you are in the same situation.

Hello, don’t mean to be rude but I am interested in pursuing a PhD in engineering and so I look up some of the schools that you CCers have been accepted to and their websites say you must have an MS before you can have a PhD (example: UIUC) so how is it that people with a BS are accepted into PhD programs?

Thanks dugmel. I’ll just try to remain patient for the time being. :)

Lydia: The requirements for acceptance and entrance into a PhD program are very specific to the school and the type of program applying to. For instance at CU Boulder in ChemE, if you plan on pursuing a PhD they recommend applying directly to that program and they also don’t require obtaining a master’s along the way (you can if you want though). Somewhat contrasting at UWashington in ChemE they also suggest applying directly to the PhD but they award a non-thesis master’s degree after the second year. Not sure if that helps, but that’s my input, understanding, and perspective.

Anybody hear anything recently?

oops. Forgot to update my GRE score -_- Silly me…
GRE : 167Q 165V 5.0AWA

And as far as projects and research exp. are concerned, I’ve done 5 different ones in my field of interest with professors in my department and a few of them from companies I did my internships in.

And I got into UIUC. yay. :D

I got into U Montreal to do cosmology…

has anyone heard from cu boulder recently?

boulder rejected me about a month ago, a few days after I emailed the secretary about their progress in processing their applicants.

An update:

Applying for: Masters, Computer Science
Accepted: UCSD (MS), UIUC (MCS), UCLA (MS), UCBerkeley (MEng), Cornell (Meng), University of Utah (MS Computing)

I’m currently considering UCLA, Cornell, and UoU as my preferred options right now, if anyone has experience with those programs (specifically Cornell MEng…it looks pretty unique).

If you’re considering Cornell, why not UCB?

UCB’s MEng program includes leadership components and isn’t as focused on technical courses as a “normal” MEng. I’m still going to look at it, but I think I want more technical coursework. I talked to a current student in the program and his description turned me off a bit.

Waitlisted at UC Davis… Umm… Ok. Oh well. Who cares, since I’ve been accepted to CU Boulder, UWashington, and Purdue. Plus I just found out I was awarded the NSF GRFP fellowship. :)
