Idk @taftmaybe , some people have only heard of the two phillips schools so I wouldn’t be surprised. I mean Taft was very high on my list when applying and I was really happy when I got in. Ultimately I choose to stay close to home but I could easily see some athletic rich kid with a building or two to donate who could consider Taft a safety. I mean, I have heard from a Lawrenceville student that there are a lot of students at Lawrencevillle who didn’t get into Andover/Exeter so schools like Taft could be safetys, it depends who you ask.

@ek1117: Seriously? I’m a prospective applicant for the next school year, and I plan on applying EVERYWHERE. (I actually mean it.) Does that mean lesser known schools will reject me if I apply to big name schools? Oh no! :(

Don’t take that at its word value. I highly doubt that’s even close to representing accurate information.

I remember as an ABC student that one school didn’t want to talk to my consultant about me since I was applying to another school which they figured I’d accept over them in the case I got into both.
And idk if you are applying to a lot of big schools then tell the interviewers from the smaller ones that you want options and variety in your options, honestly.

@boardingjunkie It is great for you that you had a consultant help navigate your application and choices, but you must realize that most people don’t do that. Your comment above seems out of “left field” for many people. Most come here for for practical advice. Please do not be elitist If you didn’t realize, no worries and please just be conscious going forward. Thanks so much.

I don’t think that that comment was elitist. By consultant, she could have meant a school guidance counselor, or any teacher, for that matter.

Even so, not everyone has a consultant, be it paid professional, guidance counselor, teacher… whatever.

@mathman1201 It depends. If you show sincere interest in a school that you are over-qualified for, they will accept you (and sometimes offer you a scholarship). However, some people make it very obvious that a school is a safety in their interviews. As long as you do your research and find things you like in all the schools you apply to, you’ll be fine.

The ABC program is hardly “elitest.” It is a scholarship program that helps students of color get a good education. I doubt @boardingjunkie paid for the consultant.

(from privateschool.about.com)

If you do this, that probably indicates that you’re a snobby, fed up imbecile. Not very many people do this, either.

Not nice or necessary, mrnephew.

IMHO there does exist “the Tufts effect” which basically means that if a school feels they are second fiddle then they won’t accept, regardless of your qualifications. Holds true in the college process and boarding schools are known to act similar. No reaches, no safeties, go for FIT and come March you’ll have some tough choices, hopefully.

Oh wow I’m sorry I didn’t know that seemed elitist at all I was just commenting about the whole “not getting accepted to smaller schools because you applied to bigger ones” things. And it wasnt really a consultant-- it was like someone advocating for me who worked for ABC (that’s their job to speak in your behalf in why your cool). Hahaha I can’t afford a true consultant sorry I was unclear I though it was the correct term to use.
Sorry!
And btw that’s just my experience I was simply offering insight guys to something I heard. Im not offering any advice other than to apply to a variety of schools.
Sheesh guys… X_X :-S I guess I’ll stop mentioning ABC at all because it always seems to get me bad feedback from other people

(Just adding random stuff here bc I added two comments oops)

No problem w you mentioning ABC or FA. Plenty of us are FA here.

And here’s a PSA:
ABC is NOT about simply giving minorities free tickets to great schools. And this will seem incredibly harsh (I apologize in advance) but if you think that people in these kinds of minority-focused programs only got in because of the program and not their own abilities, then you’re butthurt and should stop tbh.

I maintain the accuracy of my statement.

Really, if you make it clear to a school that they are a safety, then why on earth would you accept someone who’s not grateful and looks upon your school as below them?

So yes, that statement was quite necessary, and may save a few overqualified applicants who see it.

And not nice to whom?

i agree with mrnephew. look to all schools with respect. U never know where you’ll end up.

@boardingjunkie I stand corrected. Sorry! I have heard of other kids using “consultants” (the highly paid kind) and I think it is just ridiculous! I wasn’t aware of ABC - sounds like a great program and good for you.

@gratefulmom89 no I don’t mean to be disrespectful, even if it is over the internet. I just have experienced ignorance over the topic of ABC and hate how people believe I got into the school I got into (Exeter) just because I’m a minority. But yeah, I’m glad we got that cleared up!
