2014 RD decisions: discussion thread

Accepted!!! :D

some kids profile from couple pages back:

ACT : 33
SAT 2130

Hook: Built a nuclear fusion reactor and am investigating plasma density techniques

^HOLY $HIT!!! BUILT A NUCLEAR FUSION REACTOR??? How the he!! would you even do that??

^Hahahahah I KNOWWW, part of me just went “■■■■■.” but then I thought “MIT acceptee… hmm I guess it’s possible.”
Also, [Fusion is Easy-a homemade tabletop nuclear fusion reactor (Fusor) for science projects and research](http://www.brian-mcdermott.com/fusion_is_easy.htm)
LOL I kind of want to try it.

^haha, I want to try it too! (except I’ll probably burn my house down or something and that wouldn’t be good…)

Speaking of cyclotrons:

Oh holy cow ahaha, I hope that goes well for them. Not that I’m entirely missing the point of that video, but Heidi has some pretty awesome t-shirts.

Heidi was accepted EA to MIT.

See, I don’t mind individuals with accomplishments such as those of thuglife1, but for priviliged(high income, college educated parents) URM’s with mediocre stats to get in is insane.
Congratz to all those who got in.

7 people in my school got into MIT. Most ever in the history of my school. Most of them barely had over 2000 sats and 6 of them were african american or hispanic. Affirmative action is pure bs

Come on guys, move on. MIT says it practices AA, and if you happen to be an ORM from an affluent state ( like California) and have no hooks, then lower your expectations for MIT or apply to other great great schools like Caltech & Berkeley who get the best of the best irrespective of what you are born as.

The idea of a talentless URM with low scores is a straw man. Please do not succumb to late-teenage social Darwinism. A meritocracy is a fallacy.

I halfway believe that no one here thinks that any URM ever has been qualified to attend MIT, that every single one who got in had 1900s and 2.9s.

I surely hope that none of you are suggesting the URMs admitted to MIT are academically inadequate. If you’re really good enough to be accepted by MIT, you should be able to get in regardless of AA. Furthermore, the SAT/ACT are horrible measures of academic aptitude. Especially considering how much people can prep for them.

8 people from our school got into MIT, and all of them are either white or asian :O

Everyone from my school was rejected.

The one minority from my school got rejected with a 2300+ SAT.

This is changing the subject a little bit, but is it any easier to get into MIT EA?
I’m far more impressed by the one person who got into MIT RD than I am by the 2 who got in EA from my school. I know that applying EA doesn’t usually make things easier (while ED might), but I was wondering what the chances are that they went easier on their EA applicants this year…
Or perhaps I just underestimate people’s essay-writing skills.

everyone at my school was rejected. 4 people, all 2300+, all 4.0, all had at least 6 5s on AP exams, all top 10 in the class. presidents of clubs… (all white or asian)

I’d have thought the chances of that happening were miniscule… until it actually happened. Everyone at my school thinks MIT admissions is on crack (not really the point…)

S is stunned, dazed, and happily bewildered to have been accepted. We thought he was an extreme long shot because he’s not a science and math standout. He has the requisite 800’s and 5’s but no science/math EC’s at all. This is a thrilling development in his college search.
