Fishier - Oh. My. God. I actually never knew the exact title of that song, but I’ve of course heard it everywhere.

Fitting song to end anything, but for me the wait goes on. :P

What I find strange is that so many people are making out this year’s deferrals as remarkably high, when really, this year’s rejection rate was 35 percent – more than twice that of last year (16 percent). They deferred fewer kids this year than in the past. I was actually really encouraged by my deferral. I’ve basically written Yale off, but the fact that I wasn’t rejected makes me think I may be a valid candidate for other high caliber schools. (Obviously people who are rejected SCEA often go on to great schools, including Yale’s Ivy competitors.)

^looking at it realistically, deferral means you fall in the top 64% of the applicant pool. that says nothing

^^but, it also means they consider you a legit applicant. That does mean something. Really, it was probably luck more than anything that seperates deferrees from those accepted.

I’m taking my deferral as a good indicator of my smith chances(hoping for an acceptance :)

^I agree with the luck thing. it’s a f* cking crap shoot.

good luck with smith! i’m sure you’ll get in :)

Thanks Stupefy…I’m a little worried, but hopeful

Stupefy, first thing first: the deferral rate last year was 64 percent; this year it’s about 50 percent. (Unless you are combining deferred students with accepted students?) But my point is not that I’m supremely flattered (which I am not, because, as you point out, lots of people were deferred), but that SCEA applicants are generally competitive, so if we choose to see deferral in a negative light, we’re choosing to ignore something that should probably be heartening.

^ Wasn’t the deferral rate last year 47% or something?

^actually corteau91, I think you’re getting your stats from the class of 2012 early admits. check this article: [Yale Daily News - Early admittance rate drops to a record low](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/university-news/2009/01/12/early-admittance-rate-drops-to-a-record-low/)

Class of 2013 EA: 38.3% rejected, 47.6% deferred, 13.4% accepted.
Class of 2012 EA: 16% rejected, 65% deferred, 18.1% accepted

yeah the deferral rate did NOT drop. the 64 percent is deferred+admitted

I’m not trying to bring you down, I’m just trying to be realistic because I don’t want to your hopes up, nor mine. the reality is: about 100 of the deferrees will be admitted in april. thats bleak

^^ Ouch – I did indeed see the wrong year. Thanks for the correction, chhibistar6.

Stupefy, I am at no risk for getting my hopes up at this point. In fact, like I may have said earlier, I’ve basically given up on Yale. Perhaps it’s because of weaknesses in my application that I chose to feel heartened by a deferral and delve into my many other applications with a small amount of encouragement.

I think it says something that I, too, have given up on yale. you can do everything, and it’s still not good enough. I’ll be content with duke, if I even get in there

Well, I remember seeing a chance thread of yours before decisions came out and I was impressed. For some reason, your mentioning the spelling bee bit made me think your essays would have some verve. (Ha, I swweeear I’m not a CC stalker.) I definitely wouldn’t take a deferral from Yale as an indicator of your chances at other schools. And it looks like you have as good a chance as nearly any RD applicant for Yale.

^haha thanks. I thought my essay was good. writing is definitely my strength. but eh

Stupefy, you’ve had a very large presence on this board and you’ve indicated that you believe yourself to be an extremely competent writer…I am no judge of the objective elements because, who knows how yale views these items, but I am extremely curious as to your essays…You seem to pinpoint your race and some arbitrary decision on their part as reasons for deferral. Before I am inclined to reject the validity of college admissions, I would love to have the opportunity to read your essays, if you are inclined to share them, that is. I have sent all my applications and am in no way looking for ideas. I am simply curious about an applicant who so vehemently rejects the system for rejecting her. You could pm them if you like…

^I think you misinterpreted some of what I was saying. I’m not arrogant enough to say that I in particular was deferred because I’m Asian. I’m just saying that I believe a lot of the Asians deferred (some of whom I know very well personally, and could not imagine a better student) deserved to be accepted. I don’t really feel comfortable showing you my essay, sorry, but I think it’s pretty good, not absolutely amazing or anything. I’m a good writer, but I don’t have much of a story if you know what I mean

^yeah, why do you wanna see stupefy’s essay? to “verify” her writing ability??

even if northcountry “verified” stupefy’s writing ability, subjectivity would be involved just as subjectivity is involved in stupefy’s claiming her (or his?) good writing ability. So, there would be no point in doing so.

agreed. I’m also super paranoid and don’t really trust anyone so o.o
