2020 Christmas Baking?

Most years I bake five kinds of cookies and my SIL brings at least that many varieties more. This year I made three of them. I filled two take out containers for each boy stuffed them into a medium sized priority mail box along with Christmas crackers and a silly stocking present and sent them off to the boys today. I’ll do a box for SIL tomorrow.

No holiday cookie baking here. Our thing is bread. I’m looking at poppyseed rolls.

I used to bake about 12-15 types of cookies/fudge and bring a variety to friends/family. This year just one, since there will only be 2 of us , and no other gatherings. (Kids are 2400 miles away). I baked DH’s favorite, and they’re already half gone. We don’t need to eat any more cookies! It’s far too expensive to ship, but I may order a cookie plate for the kids.

I’m a good savory cook, but not a great baker. My H is a much better baker. We make a handful of Christmas goodies every year; these are mostly sweets that we had growing up. H makes Buckeyes (a chocolate candy) and two kinds of Christmas cookies (using his mother’s recipes)–nut horns and bachelor buttons.

I make one Christmas sweet: Croatian minature donuts called Fritule (they’re popular in the Dalmatian part of Croatia and also Italy). This is the only time I use a deep fryer (otherwise it sits in storage in the garage). I’ve tried lots of recipes over the years and this one is my favorite. I use a Croatian brandy called Slivovitz (plum) or Kruskovac (pear) rather than rum. Both are available in liquor stores, and both have a very high alcohol content–beware!! Normally I make spritz cookies (my Swedish grandmother’s specialty, very buttery and yummy) with a cookie press. This year so far this year I’ve only made some not-so-sweet cookies as from a diabetic cookbook … gifted books and cookies to a friend. The better recipe was with prunes and pecans. I may make them again since we have lots of prunes left.

Normally I do regular sugar cookies with Christmas cookie cutters. I just decorate with sprinkles. But I have been watching a lot of the Christmas Baking Championship and The Christmas Cookie Championship and have decided I want to try making Royal Icing to decorate with. So now I am on the hunt for meringue powder.

@tx5athome You can get meringue powder at Michael’s, Joanne’s, or Amazon

I have not baked one cookie since April, nor a pie or coffee cake. Bah humbug. Either I’d eat too much, or my guy friend with diabetes would. I certainly don’t want to risk mailing across the country. Still, I’m wanting to make donuts.
