I emailed admissions. I am extremely unsatisfied with the lady’s response, she seemed just as unknowledgeable as me when it came to the admissions. This is so unprofessional, I have been waiting so long, what even was the point of applying EA? Everyone from my school got in by the way last year and my stats are above the average, so I am expecting to get in but this lateness is giving me a disadvantage.
@CalinAmry im just a parent of applicant but I feel your pain
When you emailed I’m assuming you used your psu portal id so the reply was personal?
And would you mind if you have a minute to share with us your major switch details?
I’m glad you aren’t letting this snafu affect your confidence
???for u, and thanks if you do feel like answering my ocd questions lol
My original Major was Anthropology or Archaeology and I switched it to Biology so I could be in their science college back 1.5 months ago. My stats: 1250 SAT 3.65 GPA. It’s actually more like 3.9 atm. @ziveli513
@calinamry thx fir sharing your info Sorry to be annoying.
I really am trying to the best of my ability to try to rationally read posts and learn stuff
I had no idea that pre major choices (always excepting those with special circumstance and smeal) could make more difference than date applied
With such a wide range of stats accepted among different majors, it seems imo that many applicants weren’t able to position their application pre major with the best chance of success
By reading the psu website that’s not possible, it is only after reading tons of posts here in cc that one could possibly learn what a big impact choice of pre major, (pre major people!!!) has on acceptance
To make it worse, Major supposedly doesn’t affect acceptance to UP. It’s on the website and reports from multiple convos with admissions counselors repeat this myth
Again before anyone reminds me of smeal, and one line that some majors get more math scrutiny, without inside info would have no clue
That means that many many excellent high achieving applicants get rejected or sent to branch because they chose the wrong pre!!! Major
Honestly, everyone knows that I’m one of Penn State’s biggest champions, however, if I applied EA and had not heard anything since the deferral in December, you can bet I’d be raising hell with Penn State admissions. Calling and e mailing for a timeline in November or December or even January is excessive to me because the deadline hadn’t passed - but NOW? Now, I’d be calling and e mailing everyone possible. They have seriously missed the mark and have not even kept people updated about the timelines and their inability to meet them.
The time to be zen and calm was back in the fall - Not now! I’m watching it from a far and I’m angry for each one of you still waiting.
Penn State is a great school - and I don’t think this is representative at all of the education one receives at Penn State - but this admissions process was so screwed up this year that at this point, it’s unacceptable.
I’m wondering if under review means they are waiting for accepted students to pay their deposit to manage the yield and class size. Some have posted that university Park has accepted its students and is at “capacity.”
@jlhpsu I agree. I called yesterday and I’m emailing today. I am so sick of waiting, I might call them again later and see if I could get a better response.
@airway1 where did you read that UP is up to capacity? That’s pretty crazy if its true, especially since they promised all EA applicants decisions by the 31st. Puts anyone waiting at a significant disadvantage.
To @Vadad2019: re PS up to capacity. There was a comment on this thread some pages back, without attribution. I don’t know how solid that assessment was.
Far be it from me to defend this admissions process, but if I’m counting right,
2/1 is only “two days” ago the way psu admissions is counting
They were closed 1/31
2/1 on Friday, decisions released at midnight
Then 2/4 Monday, decisions released at midnight
Today is 2/5
Tonight at midnight 3rd release since deadline right?
They said all along it takes “several days” after decision for portal to update. The only objective piece of info from them actually
Just because no decisions posted here in cc recently doesn’t mean no decisions have been released
If no change to portal by midnight by 2/7, then maybe, for us, contacting admissions is a good idea
If a decision has been made, admissions won’t tell via email or phone
No reason to believe problem with my d application
It has been pounded into my head by veterans here that psu is random!
So I continue to wait for decision for my d. At this point it’s hard to care when any more, as long as the decision is what we have a reasonable expectation it will be
From PSU’s viewpoint, who cares? How many students caught up in the nonsense aren’t going to attend if they finally get an acceptance? Im sure those doing the grunt work care because they’re getting so many calls and emails!
As far as things being random, in our high school all the high stat kids found out way back. We have a lot of kids go to PSU and it definitely seems like the higher stat students found out much sooner than others.
@dmeyers I am very interested in your situation because my S is wait listed as well. He applied 10/22 for Liberal Arts. So you noticed a portal change at some time overnight? If so, you are the first indication these forums have had that there was ANY portal release last night.
I’d like to think you might be coming off the wait list soon. However, it does seem soon, given that EA applicants waiting here don’t have even their first decision yet. A while back (not sure what day) a whole bunch of portals had some random cycling messages. I more fear that your portal message changed but that it doesn’t mean much at this point.
Please keep in touch re: your situation because it gives us hope for our own! Thank you.
This is just embarrassing. I love PSU, but what a fiasco–and so unfair to all those kids who busted their butts to gett this far. The pain of this choice needs to go up to those in the Ivy tower – the big decision makers who decided to implement EA and Common App in the same year when they weren’t prepared to meet deadlines last year. Sorry, but I have visions that someone up top is super excited by all the applications and envisioning how they can fill up the commonwealth campuses as a result of the excess demand for UP.
Common data shows roughly 30,000 accepted to UP last year
Of those, 8,000 freshmen enrolled roughly
The psu decisions only thread on cc has about 300 posts, mostly those are decisions but not even all are
That’s about 1% of the decisions offers that went out from psu admissions last year
I’m not a math brain, but that seems statistically insignificant to establish patterns or show trends really
Plus many people who post don’t even give consistently complete stats
Often leaving out whether unweighted or weighted gpa
And most often seems to me leaving out what date applied or the major
So mostly Just interesting info while waiting for decisions here in this thread
Which has many more posts which share anecdotal but informative events and insights
We cannot deduce that no decisions have been released lately nor can we say no waves have happened
The decisions only thread is too weak to analyze beyond curiosity as to what decisions some have received so far
I’ll bet many who may have been following cc get so excited when they get a decision, good or bad, they go and never return to update
As always just my opinion fwiw as we wait and wait
