Do universities comparable to psu in attendance and selectivity use true rolling admissions?
If so, why not psu. Why not first in first out?
and maybe those on bubble may need to be informed extra time needed to process
From day 1, August 5, when my d applied directly to psu, I was puzzled as to why psu uses modified
Since Other universities we applied to use rolling
others a date and even time!!! certain like univ of Florida and all decisions released on feb 8 at 6 pm on portal
(My d got accepted btw, to ufl, wow, a nice boost after this psu delay)
I’m far from an expert, but as a “customer” of universities, why not rolling from university perspective?
psu has had negatives issues with modified rolling admissions in past years from an applicant perspective
Is there a big drawback to rolling for the university yield?
Sure seems like fewer headaches regarding fairness which I would expect any university would want to be, not only appear to be or actually end up unfair as we mostly seem to agree psu has bee this year
Not taking away anything at all from those accepted to date, absolutely congrats to all again I say
It’s psu admissions philosophy that has me puzzled
@ziveli513 most rolling admissions schools are less competitive, Pitt being one of the few remaining exceptions. Most schools like to see a big sample of their applications pool before they start making decisions, Quite a few big schools including PSU and Purdue have moved away from it (Michigan State and Indiana U are two other large schools who still use rolling).
I bet Pitt has developed a pretty good predictive model over the years, and I think they are quite effective at using it to build solid classes. For example, a lot of high stat kids from our area (Northern VA) apply to Pitt as a safety. It uses its location in a fun city, a really responsive admissions office and a healthy pool of merit money to get students to commit. Students with borderline numbers are asked for midyear grades, which allows Pitt to defer some students.
I think rolling is pretty tough to pull off though. I have come to appreciate having a fixed decision date set by admissions, which is actually met.
I agree @ziveli513 and true rolling does work at other large universities. Alabama is the same size as PSU and their admissions operates on a true rolling schedule. First in, first out. I applied there back in September and got my acceptance the next morning. It would be a better system for PSU then setting deadlines they can’t keep. Or if they wanna “compare applicants against the rest of the pool”, do what UF does and release them all at once. But a combination of both doesn’t seem effective as applicants like us have been pushed back.
Just checked, Ohio state university and Rutgers are EA, and then rolling— competitive schools like psu and Pitt?
Though psu has highest volume of applicants since so many branch campuses
Ohio state main is similar to UP in attendance though
Website states EA decisions released on rolling basis for both
My d was accepted 8 weeks after she applied to each
As chem major
so rolling worked for her , I’m sure not perfect at any big school
Thanks @annao2019 and @UKexpat88 for feedback
I learn more each time I read posts here
I’ve been lurking - daughter accepted in November and anxiously awaiting Schreyer decision.
I do think that joining Common App is a mistake for Penn State. Between Common App, Coalition, Naviance, College Board, and FAFSA, I really preferred the application process through myPennState. The SRAR was a pain, so there was some hurdle of effort. State universities should not be trying to play the numbers game to look ‘selective’. They should be serving kids who want an education. By going on Common App, families who think nothing of the $60 (or whatever) application fee have yet another advantage to put in way more applications that they ever would if they had to fill out individual applications. (My family could fall into that category, but I’ve limited my kids to 5-6 applications to only places they would actually really want to attend).
Does seem surprising psu decided to add Common ap
When they couldn’t meet 1/31 deadline last year
The press release to add Common ap specifically stated desire to be available to the 3 million plus who may not have had access to psu
In today’s world how can students who qualify for UP admissions criteria not have access to apply to psu directly?
To make matters worse, direct psu was available August 1, first time, for EA
Common ap wasn’t available if I recall until September
So my d applied directly to psu 8/5, complete and under review 8/15, stats not on any bubble for criteria either!!
Before Common ap even started bombarding admissions
Still under review, EA since 8/15, status says deferred 12/22, status changed to under review on 1/24
Called admissions 2/8, was told application in order, “surprised” no decision, “many EA still waiting”, “decision by Monday”
Ha
Hope others get good news soon!
At this point, everyone still waiting should be calling every day.
Call for your child but join a group of angry parents, this protesting on behalf of everyone. Things will only change if every person who is affected makes someone in Admissions understand their displeasure. It doesn’t have to be the random person who picks up the phone and obviously,
be nice, since it’s not that person’s fault. Calling wouldn’t advance your child’s cause specifically but would give Admissions an incentive to do better next year. There needs to be consequences. The press might hear of it. Obviously not from specific parents whose child may worry will be denied. If their lines are tied with displeased parents for days on end you may expect improvements. You have to give them an incentive otherwise they’ll just keep on doing what they have done this year and that’s just not acceptable.
(As I said earlier there will likely be a consequence wrt yield. Kids who’ve been admitted everywhere but PSU will drop it from consideration or push it from #1to#4. Others applied just for fun and never intended to attend but may have been admitted before the full effects of EA+CA were felt with ripple effects upon others with lower stats but stronger intentions to attend. High stats kids sent to branch campuses because their majors ‘look’ full when in fact they’re not due to the CA distorsion will not go. Etc.
Yield management is big business.
At this point they clearly realize all yield predictions are off and they’re stuck not knowing how to select for positive yield. A high volume of applications with a low yield isnt better than a lower volume but higher yield. And yield matters more than selectivity for rankings.)
Psu missed deadlines and promises for decisions in February and March last year class 2022 thread
Then decided to add Common ap anyway
Without staffing up to prepare
Of course parents should call if they think helpful, but I’m doubtful will make any difference since evidence shows this is the way psu does admissions
And as veterans have reminded us here, repeatedly,
there is a long line of students willing to wait behind every one who doesn’t like the way psu handles admissions, I don’t think psu will respond to disgruntled parent phone calls, imo
I for one can wait until April for a decision, others maybe can’t so good luck, let us know if you call!
This year is worse but not unprecedented
Consequences if any will come from yield issues imo
Meanwhile, may God bless penn state for THON
Hope all goes well this weekend, such an awesome gift to fight children’s cancer
As a PA family, we have been participating in FTK fundraisers since kindergarten, and freshman - senior year my d has been on the mini THON committee
Our hs does a “mini” THON overnight marathon to raise money for the penny state 4 diamonds fund to fight childhood cancer
This weekend, a girl who has been in my d broader circle of friends since kindergarten will be attending THON as a cancer survivor
She is currently in remission from stage 4, blessed and doing better each day
Her name is Sophie, hopefully she will get a chance to sing and share her gift
I know she and her family are so grateful
Though my daughter’s situation is resolved, I keep checking back here to see what’s happening.
It’s like I need to know what happens at the end of this book or like we are in a teen angst movie and when @ziveli513 's daughter finally gets her decision, there will be fireworks, music reaching a crescendo and shouts of joy from all over the world as everyone simultaneously begins dancing in a synchronized fashion. Then we can hoist her on the shoulders of two handsome young men and carry her through the cheering crowd. Fade to black.
@MYOS1634 You are saying what I was thinking the other day (and don’t think I posted). I think they have so completely lost control of their predictions that they are basically paralyzed. Since not one person has posted a decision in over a week, if they ARE still making decisions, they may be sitting on the bulk of them waiting for the smoke to clear. But how? I am trying to figure out how stalling for time (essentially creating a second, hidden “wait list”) will give them information they don’t have. Unless they have some statistics whizzes combing all the forums they know of, trying to get a sense of the feelings this year and the yield. I think the worry has to be, rather than “too small” a class, what happens if 9,000 or 10,000 actually accept this year? That would truly be untenable, as opposed to just the plain inconvenience/bad publicity and financial loss of a too-small class.
I just can’t believe how long this has gone on with no public word at all from them. And how much longer? How much uglier can they let this get?
@vamom4 that is the best post ever, teen angst movie!!!
Cheers to the hope that fireworks and shouts of joy and synchronized dancing will come soon! ??
For my d and @annao2019 and all who are still waiting whom they represent??
I have never participated in a forum online, really has been such a rewarding experience thanks to people like you!!!
@vamom4 The storyline spin would be how much interest and applications were received. The part of being overwhelmed and/or understaffed would either be buried in the story or omitted entirely.
@spqr70nj I was trying to figure out how your comment had ANYTHING to do with the movie about @ziveli513 's D! And then I realized you were talking about the news. I was like, “She can’t help write the script! She’s lost the plot!” Haha. It’s early AM!
@vamom4 , breaks my heart how senior leaders at PSU have made decisions that have hurt and frustrated so many prospective students. This messes with our reputation and PSU fans don’t tolerate that well.
And yet, there are many parts of the university that are understaffed and because we live in the middle of nowhere, finding people can be a challenge because the university doesn’t pay well.
Hope the media addresses this so that senior leaders feel the pressure.
Don’t get me wrong…I still think people should call to express their displeasure with the process.
