@Cotton2017 True. D19 got lucky tho and found her roommate in a week. She, in general, bypassed non-commital students.
@ziveli513 I actually don’t think he was ever officially waitlisted, but maybe he was? He applied EA and his portal has said ‘under review’ since then. He got a postcard about moving the date from 12/24 to 1/31, but there was no mention of a waitlist like some seem to have received.
I can’t believe you didn’t hear anything today. I thought for sure today was the day for everyone. Maybe later;)
@Propinquity4444 thanks, I think if he were wait listed it would have been a clear message in portal stating wait list as the decision
He went from under review to accepted. Yay!!
@skibunny2 and @sad1010 I think the observations about the current social media are brilliant. That is, I KNOW what you are saying is true from personal experience, and yet, as we wait and wonder (and worry?) about this process, it is all too easy to forget these facts and read into, say, the Facebook numbers. So I really appreciate these reminders!
@Cotton2017 Keep us updated on the Facebook front. Since my son is wait listed, we have not tried to join the Facebook groups. I suppose we technically COULD since he’s admitted to some campus or other.
Anyone know if PSU staff have Monday off for Presidents’ Day?
University offices are open Monday. They are also, for the most part (including Admissions) open during Spring Break.
THON begins tonight, so find a THON webcam or livestream and see what the hubbub is all about : " Someday we will dance in celebration, but until then, we dance for a cure"
The FB group I referenced is just the wave of acceptances. 1) was just a few early on 2) then came 2 and 2 3) and then came summer. NO not all have accepted, NO not all are UP, this number is just a large group on social media that isn’t very popular with that age range. I truly think for the most part, the strange cases pending will be just fine, but I think some got “lost in the shuffle”
Watching THON and sipping at the Kool-Aid!
Still under review, EA since 8/15
calling admissions again next week, FWIW ?
Hope all y’all have a nice holiday weekend/spring break, we had 60 degrees here yesterday in south central pa! heavenly taste of spring, won’t be long now ??
???
@ziveli513 this is insane ?
@penmom222 it’s ok! ?Whatever will be, will be
Thank you for thinking of us !
I will try to get an answer from admissions next week. I know her application is ok, on phone and via email admissions 2/8 confirmed no issue
so what is the problem I would like to know
I’m guessing I won’t get an explanation, but I’ll try
I would like a decision already!
@ziveli513 I’m from south central Pa as well. Which commonwealth is your home campus, if I’m allowed to ask. When we declined the waitlist, my s was admitted to Mont Alto. It’s such a small world :-h
@ErRnMom ??it is a small and friendly world here on cc, so many nice people interested in my d application progress ?
We live in Lancaster pa!
My d dad went to mont alto, 40 yrs ago, and then finished at UP
He loved mont alto, friends he met on that campus are lifelong
My d was accepted to Pitt as chem Major last October. she is leaning more and more to Pitt because ultimately she loves a big city and we have family Pittsburgh
Congrats on your sons admit, y’all must be so excited, has he committed to psu?
@ziveli513 Are you waiting to hear from chem or DUS?
@neuromom4 waiting to hear from DUS at psu
4.0uw, 5.1w. 680m 660e sat
Applied chem ea, under review 8/15 to 11/20,
I watched many others who applied later get accepted
But they had higher math sat, 700 or more
Reviewed DUS info and decided to switch fir best chances and DUS sounds very appealing for a freshman, no harm to chem ambitions
Psu changed her to DUS, status was back under review right away
Then deferred 12/22 in mass deferral, portal says due to high volume
1/24 portal changed to under review
Posts have shown students who switched to DUS in December, and even in January for reconsideration have been admitted
I was concerned major switch delayed, but several people posted they got second decisions requested in January, I don’t think that’s the reason, or if so it clearly shouldn’t be if people are getting 2nd decisions before others get first
On 2/8 on phone admissions counselor confirmed no problem with application, she was surprised and says should have been decision already
Her stats are clearly ok for DUS, under normal circumstance:)
She has been accepted as a chem Major at Pitt, Clemson, Ohio state, univ of Florida and 3 others so her stats seem acceptable at competitive schools as a chem Major i believe
And when we made the switch in November, admissions confirmed still EA, her portal still says EA
With all that said, the delay is just frustrating to me because passed deadline, no explanation
It’s not an actual problem personally for my d
Because we can wait to commit at Pitt until April with no down side for housing or anything really.
Sorry for the long answer to your short question
But I believe context is key
Still under review…
@3momsc oh noooo!!!
@3MomSC @ziveli513 I was hoping that today was the day… that decisions finalized yesterday and uploaded to portal. so sorry to hear : ( I would be knocking on doors come Monday.
So I did go and join a Facebook parents group. I posted last night about if anyone there was on the wait list. Surprisingly I had several answers in short order that went something like this: We declined the wait list and within days our child was offered Summer Start at UP. (Without knowing about Summer Start or checking the box.)
So my S gets excited and wants me to do that, which I won’t do, because in other moments he still says if he gets into his #1 by April 1, that’s where he’ll go. (But only like 12.9% got admitted to his #1 last year.)
I know I’ve asked to have Summer Start explained and I do think I understand it. But if you’re a warm body taking up dorm space in the summer, you’re still taking up space in the fall, so I don’t GET IT. If PSU is out of space at UP in the fall, how does starting in the summer FIX anything?
Curiouser and curiouser.
Summer start students have a better shot at success, so if academic qualifications are the issue it’s seen as a safety bet to prevent a drop out.
For others, their presence ensures “summer melt” doesn’t impact the freshman class numbers too much. (“Summer melt” is the name for the hundreds of kids who commit May 1st and, for whatever reason, dont show up for orientation or registration.)
@MYOS1634 Thank you. I understand about the increased success. How would I know if my son is one whose academic qualifications they are concerned about. His portal had said something before about how they believed he had what it took to be successful at PSU (or UP?) but that there was no space.
I didn’t know summer melt was a big issue. I can see it might be some times for some people. In fact, it might happen to us if we don’t have a firm UP result by May 1. Then my son would have to accept elsewhere, and I suppose, if he heard between May 1 and May 15 that UP did in fact have space for him, he would have to “summer melt” where he’d deposited.
Even with this greater understanding, these things you mention help keep yield from going too LOW. I would think that this year the real worry is it going too HIGH. Hence an early wait list, people still waiting at this late date, and so on. With 20,000 more applicants that last year, just accepting the same exact qualified percentage as last year would be too high a yield. So it seems like moving “iffy” students to Summer Start is backwards when not applicants have even been decided on. The numbers game is very complex, no doubt. But I don’t get any of this “logic”.
