2023 PSU Waiting for Decisions

@annao2019 do you know when they changed the website to include “waitlisted” to one of the outcomes now fpr those who were in the AE differed pool?

@MyaCocoa after acceptance decision is posted on the portal, an acceptance letter/packet comes in the mail within a week
My d doesn’t want me to tell her when decision shows in portal but wants the hopefully happy news to be from the mailbox

Correction to my previous post, it was 2015-2016 where 98% of those wait listed were then admitted. From the psu common data set:

“C2. Freshman wait-listed students (students who met admission requirements but whose final admission was contingent on space availability).

If yes, please answer the questions below for Fall 2015 admissions:
Wait List Number
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list 1,473
Number accepting a place on the waiting list 1,473
Number of wait-listed students admitted 1,445”

And I think this is UP, but I’m not sure of that to be fair, for final decision may be that wait listed accepted means branch too

The cds info is from the UP page though

But wait list is not the end. Hope!

I guess the bottom line is that we EA and regular decision priority need to prepare ourselves that we may be wait listed on 1/31

But that there is hope that one can still be admitted to UP from the wait list

Sadly the key word is still “wait” ?

Where is everyone seeing “Wait Listed” as now one of the decision options? That would be upsetting to get that after waiting this long as a EA applicant. My son already was accepted into 3 other OOS large schools. However Penn State is his #1 choice, as well as ours. Ugh…

It is so hard seeing all the emails come in from the other schools that he was accepted to. I feel like he is missing out on this part of the experience.

it just seems very bizarre to me that there have not been any acceptances since the 1/2/19 date.

@off2co11ege I copied and pasted from the PSU admissions website

Wait list is now one of the 3 decisions promised by “end of January”

Which means EA and priority review , all applicants who met the 11/1 deadline and the 11/30 deadline are in one group with decision promised by 1/31

So we have to realize we can be wait listed even though applied EA

And we are having the same experience, if my d has been easily accepted at large schools(who send awesome welcoming emails, not “check the portal”) similar to Psu, why not psu?

Which is her sentimental first choice as a legacy kid who grew up going to happy valley

@off2co11ege
From penn state admissions under EA FAQ
“What does a deferred decision mean?
It means that a student’s decision timeline has been deferred to our November Priority review timeline and the applicant will receive an admissions decision of admit, deny or waitlist by the end of January.”

@ziveli513
Thanks!!! Sounds like we are in the same camp!

Were the waitlisted people from last year that were admitted, admitted into main or a branch campus?

@off2co11ege yes! That helps so much to know we aren’t alone ?fingers crossed for you
This year is unprecedented high volume due to EA and common ap being added, according to PSU, so it helps to share new updated info here in this thread
We all need to prepare we may be wait listed

@mattcccc I corrected my info on wait list admits it to 2015-2016, not last year, sorry
And whether or not branch isn’t clear

I think 98% of wait list were admitted to UP because the common data set the numbers come from is for UP

But that’s not a guarantee, I think it’s safe to say it’s implied?

What disappoints me is that our portal message that states EA deferred to 1/31 due to high volume doesn’t mention three decisions as admit deny wait list

That’s new info from the psu EA FAQ on their admissions page

Would be helpful to know wait list possibility up front
But I’m guessing it’s evolved to wait list possibility since our portal decision 12/22

I’m confused as to why PSU waited this long to add the waitlist decision. If they knew they were swamped and can’t make their deadlines, why was it not included in the original deferral message and letter? I am in the same boat as a lot of you and was startled when I was just scrolling through the website and found that. Why haven’t they announced that yet??? Twitter, Facebook, Instagram? Nothing. The lack of communication is frustrating.

The link to the message of “waitlist” on their website:

Personally I’m disappointed but still willing to wait. My family has history with Penn State going all the way back to my great grandmother. I went to lots of penn state football games when I was young, have friends who go there. It’s been my top choice for a long time. IMO an extra 2 months is worth it if I can spend the next four years at UP. I just wish they were more open with applicants about what’s going on.

@hockeylife I can’t tell you and exact time, but I do look on their website daily for updates and yesterday afternoon was the first time I saw it.

@annao2019 I agree with you completely
So glad you found the tiny reference on the EA FAQ psu admissions page for wait list and then shared it here

No one here was aware it seems !

Managing expectations of we who wait by giving us all info and updates is useful to admissions

Would save them from many phone calls and emails which will slow them down

I wish you the best of luck, and hope your wait will result in admit, sooner than later but however long it may take

I think we who love Psu have no choice

So… If you were to be put on a “wait list”, what is the deadline to receive an answer whether you were accepted or not, 3/31??? I think if that’s the case, we have no choice but to put the deposit down for another school and start the process there.

Just so upsetting, when you think you are being proactive as a Junior in High School, and knocking out your campus visits. Submitting your applications early. Filling out FAFSA on opening day. All to avoid this stress. Well that didn’t pan out to well. Haha!

@ziveli513 thank you!! I wish you the best of luck as well :)??

@off2co11ege I 100% agree. I did everything early, got all my applications in on time, and yet I’m still stressed and have to wait… My second choice is the University of Alabama, their deadline to put in deposits to pick housing is February 1st. So I have a very limited window before I start losing money because of this. It has definitely taught me a good lesson on patience and persistence though.

@annao2019? Thank you !

@annao2019 I don’t blame you regarding the looming deposits that need to be made. My son is in the same situation with Penn State. He still needs to hear from other schools but I am encouraging him to put down the refundable deposit at one school so he can secure housing. Plus that school is throwing him several thousand dollars in merit scholarship. PSU is still his first choice but if the timing and aid doesn’t pan out, then one must go down to the next school on the list. I don’t recommend that he accept being on he waitlist.

This whole process is so annoying, esp. when they tweeted on 1/2 that they were back at work & continuing to roll out decisions. We’re going to be putting down a deposit for another school soon just in case. Although my sons top choice doesn’t notify until April 1st., which is so late. I’m assuming no decisions will be coming before the 31st.

I wonder if penn state admissions would send an email to all who have been admitted but haven’t committed yet to remind them when they commit and pay deposit they get in line for housing

And ask if not planning to commit to please decline now as there is a wait list forming

Email takes a few minutes, no cost, maybe try to untangle this mess they have created

An email like that would give an incentive to students to commit and encourage those who aren’t to decline to maybe get some spots open

Of course people who plan to decline may just ignore but it’s at least proactive?

I’m not going to contact admissions since they are so busy, I’m just hoping for some action and putting it out there into universe FWIW

The housing issue will be relevant soon
