@greencarrot01 All good things in your application. If your school doesn’t weight then Penn State may convert your grades to give you a better shot depending on your grades in your AP and honors classes.
Are you against applying DUS? You could probably call and ask to speak to an admissions rep (not the person who answers the phone) and ask if that’s an option at this point. I think you’d have no problem getting in DUS/Summer and then you take the exact same entry to major requirements as Smeal pre-majors. Keep in mind, NO ONE is in a major until the end of soph year. Everyone…DUS intending for Smeal, or Smeal pre majors, take the exact same classes to get finally “in” to the major. It is not a disadvantage.
I’d call and just see your options - can’t hurt! Best of luck to you - you are a smart kid and I’m sure Penn State will see that. You just need to get over that GPA hump that is a result of your school not weighting grades.
With all due respect I think if you review my posts today I never suggested any advice regarding switching to DUS@Psu2023dad
I wouldn’t presume
And yes my “kid” did choose to switch to DUS from chemistry end of November
After reading about DUS at psu website she realized DUS was appealing
Though she has been accepted as Chem major at other schools while we have been waiting
Since 8/15
Sigh
@greencarrot01 : Ask what your options are at this point. DON’T say you worry Smeal is too hard so you’re thinking DUS but you’re not sure you picked the right major ;).
You have the rigor they want, except for Calculus. If you found calc AB hard, you’ll need to review everything through precalculus before you take ALEKS and then prep over the summer using Khan academy (for instance) so that you don’t jump into Calc for business “cold”. It’ll go twice as fast as AB but most examples will be related to business. The content will still be math concepts and it will be hard.
Other than that, you’re good. PSU may well recalculate your GPA according to their formula that evens out all the different ways there are to calculate grades and GPA’s.
At this point, I’d wait till I hear back, then I’d be ready to call immediately and ask for a switch to summer/DUS, just in case.
Well @greencarrot01 I think you now have had different veterans giving you different advice about calling admissions again ?
Sometimes within the same post ?
And I think I just read advice given based on weighted gpa of 3.6 for smeal
But your original post stated your gpa is unweighted
Then other posts advising you…
Which I think reminds all who wait for a decision here that all internet advice should be taken with a grain of salt
Alright, so talked to parents and we agreed that DUS seems like a good option at this point. Called into admissions office, spoke to admissions rep and she told me that changing to DUS Fall/Summer consideration was a good option for me. I feel like this works out perfectly because if I do not get into fall for DUS, I have summer to fall back on and I can still attend the main campus so it is now changed to that. I really appreciate all the great help and support I received from all of you guys and i’m praying that this somehow works out. Thanks guys!
@caymangirl38: hang in there. Distract yourself by investigating Housing options
@ziveli513: you can cross reference lots of information. For instance, look up Bubble Chart. Then, think it’s been modified; adjust keeping in mind that it applies to students once their grades have been homogenized and that the range covers all colleges, with huge differences between, say, Engineering&Smeal v. Ag and Liberal Arts.

@greencarrot01 Terrific! Admissions gave you the same advice that some of us here were and that is great advice. I think you are in an excellent position now and I wish you the best of luck!
@ziveli513 I’m not sure what posts you are reading but everyone’s posts gave the same advice based on the same information. 3.6 GPA = Apply DUS Summer option. The admissions reps agreed, so…
The 3.6 is UW, but there is no Weighted to refer to so the UW gpa is all Penn State will have. “with all due respect”, I remain confused as to why you continue to post only contradicting the advice I specifically give without anything specific to add. It baffles the mind. I continue to wish your daughter is notified very soon of Penn State’s decision.
I saw one the other day on the ”admissions decisions” thread that said they got accepted on January 12th for engineering. That was the only one I saw. I was hopeful that day thinking there’d be more. Back to waiting.
@spqr70nj I don’t know I this helps, but my daughter was accepted directly into SMEAL with a 3.8 weighted, 3.5 unweighted and a 1440 SAT. So it is possible you might get into smeal summer with those stats since mine had a 3.5 unweighted too and got directly in. But ultimately the decision is up to you and your family whether to take the risk. DUS with summer option likely increases the odds of admission. Best of luck!!!
Hi @Mecsesq1 Actually, my son applied and was admitted to the School of Engineering just before Christmas through the 2+2 program. Since we are OOS, based on exchanges with @jlhpsu and @Sophley , we decided to ask Admissions for reconsideration under the PSU Summer start at University Park. We didn’t have that option checked off on his initial application. Our fingers are crossed that this gets him there.
I’m wondering if anyone’s portals are updating at midnight still?
No new posts on the decisions thread lately so no clue
At least before 12/22 mass deferral there were almost daily decisions so we could be happy for others
And hope to be next
Now, no decisions posted since 1/2
