2023 PSU Waiting for Decisions

@lucyvanpelt FWIW as I have posted before, my d applied directly to penn state EA and Pitt on August 5, we are a pa PSU family

application at psu portal showed complete and under review 8/15
Penn state is her 1st choice, Pitt a close 2nd
Pitt accepted my d as chem major sept 11

In sept, my d applied as chem major via coalition and common app to Ohio state, Clemson, Rutgers, Drexel and univ of sc

She has been accepted at all but penn state to date

As I have posted many times, my d is a legacy, grew up going to nearby happy valley fir football games, she has a sentimental attachment to UP

Her stats place her in top 25% of psu up enrolled students according to the UP cds

She has a reasonable expectation to be admitted to UP

EA surprisingly has taken much longer and has frustrated me, end of November d decided to switch to DUS at UP as she found the psu website description appealing

This may have delayed her decision but end of November she had already been under review since August and admissions completed the change instantly, confirmed her status was still EA and she was under review in the portal within an hour

15 weeks waiting as chem major, now many weeks added waiting

Waiting More than 6 weeks as u posted, fair enough to be frustrated I think

While waiting I have Learned many things from posts here in this thread about psu housing and other factors that we will weigh wisely against Pitt, whose policies are more appealing as of now and in state so probably most affordable though scholarships are pending to oos

But since Pitt Housing selection doesn’t take place until June and is a fair lottery with equal opportunity for all who commit by may 1, we can wait for PSU admissions to eventually give us a decision since that’s what my d wants

Then we will sit down with d and weigh all the pros and cons of each school where she has been accepted and review scholarships she has been offered

WE ARE…still hopeful that penn state up will accept my d

And surprised at how many times I have been told to choose another school by posters here, ouch

Luckily my d is blissfully unaware as she isn’t a member of this forum

@kansha I agree. My son opted for the direct PSU app because we wanted to ensure timely submission prior to 11/1. We noticed the essay was not required under Common App but completed it with the direct school app which was not an issue. I have two more sons in the pre-college pipeline in a few years and must say that I really appreciated the old school approach of one application per school. I feel this consolidated application approach does not provide schools with the full picture of a student nor the their true motivation to apply to a specific school of interest. We are in a society of ā€˜checking the box’ and paying the fee, and move on. It’s all way too easy.

@UKexpat88 congrats to you on your sons good news from Perdue
And congrats to @kansha on Perdue

I’m glad that reduced stress, same here with the other acceptances my d has received
I too count us fortunate to have options though psu up is still her top choice

If psu admissions has pushed priority decision into February, I Hope decisions come quickly

@kansha interesting to learn more about how other schools handle admissions more efficiently and therefore I would say fairly

Seems psu admissions leaders needed to do more research how other schools handle before they made two big changes like adding EA and common ap

Though we are frustrated out here, ultimately it is psu admissions policies that have caused problems for psu admissions staff most of all!

?

@airway1 do u mind updating, did admissions tell you that your students nov 7 application specifically was being answered in February?

Or did admissions say yesterday to you that all priority decision (in by 11/30, decision1/31) will get decision after 1/31

Thanks. This is news, maybe

@ziveli513 I was told right now EA gets priority. I need to check if my son picked EA. When I check in dec I was told that everything was submitted and we would get decision response by January. Yesterday I was told in Feb., we wait…

@airway1 thanks, if your son picked EA and was told February, that would be news, hope not ea
But regardless thanks for the reply and good luck!

@ziveli513 I believe @airway mentioned in a previous post that her son applied on 11/7, therefore that would not be considered EA. The deadline for EA was 11/1. I am glad to hear that they are taking care of the EA applicants first.

@off2co11ege yes that’s how I read that first post too from @airway1
Good news for EA it seems to me, but sorry maybe means delay past 1/31 for priority group

if admissions has decided to delay priority decisions past 1/31 that news should come from admissions via email ?

I am a senior in High School and I applied EA to UP and I was deferred before the holiday season. I have a 4.0 GPA and a 1200 on my SAT, I’ve taken a good amount of Honors classes and two AP classes this year. I initially applied for Smeal, but I decided to call and change my Major to DUS because I read it would help my chances. I cannot do the summer classes, do you think my chances are good?

@ziveli513 I think they are still planning on getting priority decisions (submitted by Nov. 30th) by 1/31. (and that’s what my sources are telling me).

@vamom4 thanks for the update that a classmate just heard. It is a good reminder that CC posters are a small subset.

@ziveli513 good summary of where you stand on page 87. Not sure you need to continue to repeat it any more. May help your sanity not to continually re-hash it. I find, sometimes, if I am on tenterhooks waiting for something, it is easier to walk away and distract with something else (you know, ā€œa watched pot never boilsā€ and all that).

@Burnssssy no one really knows this year. Certainly, your GPA is strong - which is the major part of the decision, but your SAT is below the middle 50%. Applying DUS will give you a stronger chance of admittance - which is smart since you will take the same classes as pre-major Smeal students. I hope it works out in your favor!

@lucyvanpelt Thank you very much, I appreciate the help. I am remaining patient but also very nervous.

Just called admissions. EA and priority decisions by 1/31. as expected
Yay

If you continually call admissions with questions easily answered elsewhere and as expected, all you are doing is delaying admissions from getting their job done and contributing to the wait. I’d also be very suspect of giving your name every time you call if you are a frequent caller as the squeaky wheel may not be something they want to deal with for 4 more years.

@ziveli513 just curious as to whether your d is as anxious and as stressed as you appear to be with getting an acceptance into PSU? She seems to have many other great options!! I truly believe she will be accepted based on her stats. If I recall correctly, you were stressed in the fall about whether she should keep the chem major or switch to dus for a better chance with acceptance. I will be stunned if she is not accepted. Good Luck (and do you like wine? that may help with your nerves). ?

@krabbiek. She’s not stressed at all ?thanks fir asking ?
I’m actually not stressed either.

Irritated by psu admissions failure to prepare for unprecedented high volume after deciding to add EA and common ap this season, as are many people who post here ?

Would have liked to get an actual decision by 12/22 as promised by EA, instead of pause to what looks like 1/31

And I’m Just too quick to post
Hard to diagnose stress via reading posts, but I appreciate your feedback

Maybe people who read others posts and become annoyed may be stressed?

Can always scroll past my posts

Believe it or not I have collected quite a few ā€œlikesā€ ā€œagreesā€ and ā€œhelpfulsā€ along the way

To each his own as to what is annoying I guess

Love wine :). But don’t need for my nerves  chocolate is more fun
Don’t want to start day drinking! Lol
Wishing you good luck too, and all who wait for a decision here in this thread

Y’all gonna get your decision in less than 2 weeks so calm down. I suggest you guys do what I’m doing and not check your portal until January 31st.

I’m going to go along with that idea and not check the portal until January 31st. ? We made it this far just a couple more weeks and we are finally done waiting.

@spqr70nj Oops! I think I meant to reply to Greencarrot01 and accidentally replied to you! Haha. Clearly I should have been wearing my glasses. Congrats on the acceptance to 2+2 engineering and I wish you good luck in the reconsideration process for summer start!
