Anyone know if engineering decisions for those who applied before November 30 (not early action) will be hearing back by Jan 31? PSU’s website says we should hear back by the 31st with the exception of a few programs and I’m not sure if engineering is one of those
@MyaCocoa Good luck to you and your son!!
And I am OUTTA HERE. You all can go back to ripping each other apart. One other person who was told to go away I see HAS gone away, and yet that person expressed no more worry than I myself feel. So thanks for the support Y’ALL. NOT. I guess we can get support if we’re all smiles and sunshine. In which case we don’t need it. MODERATOR: Put at the top of the thread that those who are not perpetually working with their glass fully full need not comment.
I am also curious how PSU is going to pull off finishing up the rest of EA and Regular Decision applications by Jan 31st. They did promise us a decision by that date so I really hope they don’t go back on that. I’m sure that they will be able to handle it. I haven’t heard of many decisions being released but since it’s random we should be hearing any day now. 8 business days and counting?
@SAD1010 so sorry if we are not sufficiently grateful to PSU for deigning to consider our applications.
In all seriousness, for many students the admissions process at PSU this year has been a joke. My son applied to multiple schools. He had a couple of denials, a deferral and some acceptances. At other schools, even where he was denied, I feel confident that the process was conducted fairly. No matter the outcome at PSU I will have serious doubts about the integrity and fairness of the this year’s admissions process.
PSU is a solid state institution, but it is not the end-all, be-all. A little humility goes a long way.
@UKexpat88 I hope you then will choose another school to attend. Good luck!
@MyaCocoa The other poster you are speaking of has not been asked to leave by any moderator, at least not at this time. She has been banned and on probation other times for many outrageous reasons. But if she left this time, she did so of her own volition. I disagree with you that the posts are typical anxiety. If people are able to post here about their frustration - others are able to reply with their frustration of 10, 15 or 20 posts from the same person daily. It eats up all of the oxygen in the room. We are advised to scroll by - but when there are 15 posts from the same person, well, again, eats up the oxygen. I am of course, not speaking of you.
At the end of the day, Penn State hasn’t broken any promises to anyone YET. They have done things in ways that they could have done better this cycle - but there are growing pains with EA and common App. It truly stinks that you guys were caught up in the new procedures. But someone has to be first.
People speculating that since you haven’t heard yet, you won’t hear by January 31 is counterproductive. There is no reason to think that.
During the last week of decisions, they release thousands of decisions. The portal is updated many times daily. If you don’t hear by January 31, then I’ll be right behind you with the pitchforks - but not now.
People make up their own expectations and then get mad when Penn State doesn’t live up to something they never said they’d do.
College admissions is stressful and scary and can bring out the worst in people. This is a Penn State admissions page. People here generally like Penn State. I, personally, can see her flaws too, but I also give them the benefit of the doubt usually. It’s an amazing university and while certainly not all of their processes are perfect - I think their good outweighs the bad and most people here agree or else they would not be so anxious to hear from Penn State.
I truly hope everyone hears soon - and I just want everyone to take some deep breaths. Everyone’s nerves are shot here. This board has been WILDLY more negative than in the past 5 years I’ve been here. Some old timers are expressing frustration at that. It’s always been a place to vent and that’s fine. And 95% of the posts are just that.
@ukexpat88 First of all, Penn State isn’t a state school. It’s state affiliated but only gets 5% of it’s funding from the state…hence the much higher tuition than actual Pennsylvania STATE schools (that get 95% funding from the state). It’s an important distinction actually.
Secondly, we have every reason to be proud. We are top notch in Engineering, Business, Nursing, etc… People come from all over the globe to come to Penn State.
I really wish people would research the admissions process for Penn State before they apply so that they are not shocked when it works out exactly the way Penn State said it would.
I also wish Penn State would go to traditional rolling decisions, but my guess is they will not because too many middle of the road stat kids will be locked out. And even though we love Penn State, we aren’t an Ivy and don’t want to be.
- State College only got about 8" of snow. No blizzard here. Colder than anything, though
- PSU offices are open Monday, including Admissions. No classes, though
- Admissions is like labor -- all optimism in the beginning, declining to pain and recrimination, ending with forgetful joy and anticipation.
Let me offer the persepctive that PSU has rarely, if ever, missed the January deadline for those with apps in on time. The bureaucracy of a big school cannot be overstated. When you have to have sixteen forms to order approved food for an approved meeting at an approved building on an approved date with approved people, …how much more likely is it that somewhere there is an argument about yield that Admissions is only one voice in?
Those of you angry with the process, I totally agree. No qualifiers. If you think you are angry now, wait until you get zero scholarship money — but in 5 years when your child is graduated, or is graduating from the Perfect Happy Fit (whether it is PSU or someplace else) this will be a distant memory. Good luck to everyone!!
ive been reallt throughly following this thread weeks before i got deferred, penn state is my number one choice and i feel pretty confident that ill get into up in the fall and i even did summer entrance just in case but im nervous about my gpa and the fact i cant keep looking at my ssr or whatever. do they look at unweighted or weighted gpa for admissions.
@redwoodschool were you actually deferred? or deferred to the priority action filing group. psu didn’t have enough time to review all EA applicants by the 12/24 date so those that were not reviewed were pushed into the 1/31 date. it will tell you on your portal.
i got deferred back on dec 20th from ea to priority filing, still havent heard anything like most people still waiting even though i applied back in early october
no one has gotten decisions yet?
@juuuh1991 A few people reported getting decisions on the decision thread but not many. 8 more business days until Jan 31st. By then both deferred Early Action and Regular Decision candidates will hear a decision.
@MyaCocoa
Alive and well and reading and enjoying it all immensely, never assume anything I say, I haven’t gone anywhere
?
Still waiting for decision
But A few days ago Saw on psu admissions website under FAQ, “may not get a decision in portal by 1/31, may take a few days for the decision to show, doesn’t mean decision hasn’t been made, just that portal hasn’t updated”
Go look it up, it blew my mind that if I read that right, psu admissions is preparing us that some who applied EA and priority decision by 11/30, may not be notified in the PORTAL by 1/31
But psu won’t have broken promise fir a decision by 1/31, just maybe won’t give notice 1/31
Maybe I read it wrong I hope. Can’t even with psu admissions any more
After that, I just stopped caring lol
We will hear when we hear, and then will choose
@ziveli513 I noticed that as well. I’m just hoping that we are notified before then but who knows at this point. I think they will be making decisions on Jan 31st as well so if anything the portal should just update at midnight after the fact. I guess we will have to wait and see when we are notified.
@collegegirl2023 You are correct. They will make decisions on the 31st. Then the portal updates. They cannot have all decisions released at the same time for technical reasons so the decisions made on the 31st MAY take a bit of time to show (like a day or two at most). It’s been like this every single year. There are always a few people who don’t hear on the 31st and then they hear on the 1st when the portal has updated. I’ve only seen it happen to a handful of people though, so odds are good that it will not happen to you! Also, keep in mind that the portal will begin to update many times daily in the next few days. When my daughter heard on January 26, 2015 at 6:30pm, she was the fourth update of the day and there were two more after her!
@jlhpsu do you know if the engineering application decisions are also released by the 31st for those who applied before Nov 30? PSU’s website says that some programs don’t release their decisions by then and I’m not sure if engineering is included in that
@hansenelliott007 I would imagine that engineering will be part of that release. My son was previously notified and accepted to the College of Engineering but we asked for reconsideration for Summer start.
@hansenelliott007 Engineering is usually part of the release. The ones that may be delayed are majors that need portfolios and the like…General majors are usually part of the Jan 31 release date.
