Those look so beautiful! It’s been too hot here. The only things still going strong are my peppers.
Same weather conditions here in East TN; all I have left now are my okra and hot peppers.
Making @abasket ‘s marinara sauce because we are drowning in tomatoes!
I bought a ChefPreserve gizmo so will freeze a bunch of the sauce!
Keeping my fingers crossed the local pests won’t figure out quince. There are a few big ones on the tree.. ![]()

Hope your sauce turns out!
I made homemade Tomato soup tonight with some cheesy toast. Delicious recipe. It makes a lot though. I halved it and still have probably 6 generous servings
Thank you for posting the recipe of that sauce. It turned out really well. Tasty.
Any suggestions as to how to keep ants out of the soil. It’s in containers and I don’t have aphids.
Is there too much moisture under the pot or standing water?
No moisture, I have a lot of ants in general but I wonder if they came in with the bagged potting soil.
When the last tomato and basil plants finish I’m going to empty out the largest containers. Seirslti had one small pot near my pool that had a jalapeno plant that got totally covered in ants. I had an older jalapeno in the pot right beside it that didn’t have ants.
I assume you tried Terro and it didn’t work? No idea why ants decided to make a homestead in your garden.
Do you or anyone have ideas for what to do with quince? This looks like a good year for our quince tree.
I make quince jam. No need for pectin because quince is naturally rich in it. Here is the recipe I used:
The jam is delicious with crackers and soft cheese!
I also use it to replace some apples in apple pie. And as apple replacement in roasted roots with fennel.
This isn’t really “gardening” but look what we got at Costco the other day! HUGE! (will take another photo in the daylight)
We have tons and tons of habanero peppers! Any ideas on how to save/preserve these for later use?
I saw a recipe for a hot sauce with these peppers, onions, garlic and apple cider vinegar that I might try.
@Bromfield2 has a history of making pepper jam with various peppers! Maybe she will have an idea!
I imagine they are quite spicy. This sounds like a well loved recipe - would make great gifts at the holidays! https://www.chilipeppermadness.com/recipes/habanero-hot-sauce/
Thanks for that recipe @abasket. Wouldn’t have thought of adding carrots!
I’ve experimented with lots of hot peppery jam recipes and this is the one I use for habanero jam. It’s a mixture of peaches and habanero and even though it’s spicy, it’s not impossible to eat. You can put the peach habanero jam over brie or cream cheese and serve it with crackers. You can also use it to glaze a pork roast or ham. This recipe calls for pectin–the one I use is Pomona Pectin.
Beautiful entry to your home!
