Yesterday we pulled the onions and they are currently curing in the garage. The whole garage smells oniony. We have been eating green beans every night this week. Our peas are pretty much done. We have had one green pepper. I am worried that we won’t get many and I don’t know why. Tomatoes are coming on but slowly but that may be the kind I planted.
We got a pretty late start with our vegetables this year due to travel and tons of rain. So it will still be a while for the tomatoes. My zucchini plant goes crazy every year and it is currently taking over almost half of the bed. We have not been able to keep the deer from our cucumber plant (despite many strategies), so I’m not sure we’ll get any this year. I did get my first good batch off shishitos last night so I’m looking forward to roasting them. So good! Also, I tried lilies in the ground and dahlia tubers in the far raised bed. The deer ate the lilies as soon as they really started growing. I thought I followed the instructions for the dahlias, but it’s been about two months and there is nothing coming out of the ground (the instructions said 4-6 weeks). It’s frustrating because they were kind of expensive. If anyone has any advice, would love to hear. Here are some pics from a few weeks ago, as well as my shishitos.
At this point, I would dig up the dahlias and see if they are still viable or rotted, dried out, etc. dahlias should be getting ready to bloom this time of the year!
Ok thanks, will do. I ordered them from Breck’s and from what I read it said for my zone I could plant in early May. How do I tell if they are still viable? We used good soil with a lot of organic material, but maybe they got too much rain?
The tubers should be firm and show sign of sprouting/growth. If they are mushy or dry with no signs of life, I’d take them out. It is possible that too much rain triggered rot. Or maybe they were eaten by a critter?
I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve read where people have said their dahlias aren’t even emerging. Very odd!
I am no
Dahlia expert but planted some
From last year. About 1/2 came
Up but none
Close
To blooming yet
Nice looking shishitos!
Wow that’s frustrating. This is my first time and I thought I did everything right. Such a bummer.
Well I dug them up last night and this is what I found. I had planted four different clumps of potato-like roots with the eye facing up. I thought we had very well draining soil, but we did have a lot more rain than usual, so I guess they rotted? These two groups held their form better than the others. Ugh
Oh bummer. They look pretty dead to me.
Who else is battling this dreaded bug? They are rampant in our area and it has become a problem in our yard the last week or so. They destroy plants - especially liking my rose bushes - and are disgusting in our pool. The next door neighbors giant oak tree is not helping. I think they are falling from it.
My tomatoes are finally starting to ripen. Cucumbers are still going strong, and container zucchini decided to produce, too! Also got my first fig off the Desert King tree.
Produce season!!!
Really easy recipe I made with a fresh zucchini I had - just mix all the ingredients up and bake!
Changes I made:
Shredded my zucchini and then let it drain for a half hour or so.
Took the corn off one ear of corn and added uncooked
Added extra cheese to the mixture - about a 1/3 cup.
You could add other veggies or a protein - just recommend to avoid water filled veggies or drain or sauté first
Thanks for posting this! I’m totally making it this week!
To me it’s a meal. But H wont touch it. I’d slice some tomatoes next to it with salt and pepper and maybe a scoop of cottage cheese and call it a day!
YUM. I’m holding myself back from going to get some more for a snack. I really like the crunch that the raw corn gave it in my version .
I did not have corn, so it is just zucchini! My husband says thanks! He just had it.
Wonder if this would work with cucumbers? Or are they too watery? We’ve had a bumper crop of cucumbers this year - 30+ and counting in the last ten days. Running out of ideas on what to do with them!
