25 to 30 ACT: Is the Jump Realistic?

It depends on the distribution of your scores. If your subscores were evenly distributed it’s going to be a lot harder than if only one or two are low. My son improved 11 points (25->36) between his first and final time, but that was over several years, and the first was before he had taken geometry.

I think what students use the most are the red book, barron’s ACT 36, princeton review. I tried all of them, good explanations with questions that are very similar to the real test. I did find the red book easier than the actual one, but I think it’s still helpful. If you want to start with some tips to approaching the problems, I recommend PR’s 1296 ACT. English seems to be your strongest section, but you can still improve by memorizing some ACT grammar rules (ex. ALWAYS choose the most concise one) Other than that, keep practicing! What I struggled the most was the reading part. I scored 24 on the first one. And I continued solving questions and raised it up to 32 (Yes… a lot of improvement ^#(^ ) But the more you practice, the faster you’ll get. You will start to see the patterns and understand what types of questions are asked for each passage. For science, I never read the passages. Reading is just waste of time!! Most of the questions ask really basic that can be easily answered by looking at the graphs and charts. Saving time is crucial in all of these sections! Good luck :slight_smile:

It is very possible. This is what you need to do if you want to get into the thirties:

  1. Get a collection from the Internet of lots of old acts that have been administered. I wouldn’t bother with the red book, it’s pretty useless. Start by taking a half an act (2 sections) every day and going over the questions you missed. Make sure you understand why you missed it and what the question was testing you for. Understanding what the question is testing can make a huge difference!!! Continue doing this (start with the older tests first) and eventually you will get more used to what you have to look for and what you have to know. Your English and Math scores should be the easiest to get up so you might want to focus on those until you are getting consistently 33+. The science and reading will be harder to raise as those are more skills based rather than knowledge based. I went from a 29 33 28 25 to a 35 36 32 28 so it is possible if you put in the work!!! Best of luck to you!!!

@lulu0207 @ninjakiwi thanks for the advice!

@TheYellowBiscuit idk about you…but the lowest scores for me always come from the math and science sections (24 and 21 respectively)…Anybody have recommendations on ACT math-specific books?

@lulu0207

Thank you so much for your response!

@mack900

Yeah, I have always struggled with math and science stuff. I got a 24 in all the sections, but English. Some math intensive stuff would definitely help! I am 100 percent sure that I have gaps in my math foundation!

Hey, should I study (plan currently) an ACT TEST (I finished an English one) a day and go through missed or should I do the same one everyday rather than switching to Math tomorrow? Advice is good. Thanks.

@TheYellowBiscuit I find it better to study one section at a time until you think you’ve mastered that section. Move on and master, then do another practice test once you’re done with all sections. See what sections you’re still off on a study it more and see why you’re missing it.
