Thanks so much for the good wishes. I also got in to UCSD, UCSB, and UC Davis. The girl’s major was chemistry or biology or some science related study.

Lots of students from my daughter’s school in Los Angeles did not get into Berkeley or UCLA-- even with a 4.0. It’s discouraging but these two schools are not necessarily “the best”. I know… I teach at one of them.

Ryan,
Can I read your essay?

For UCLA, CS 1, CS 2, and CS 20 are not absolutely equivalent to “one course in computer programming.”

For UC Berkeley, you get no credit for UC Berkeley’s Math 54 since you did not complete two courses in a series at the same college.

I cannot think of any reasons other than those two reasons above. Essay and extracurricular activities may be helpful, but they cannot substitute for good grades you have attained so far. By the way, can I take a look at your essays? I want to know how you demostrated interest in your major.

@LaysOriginal
CS1, CS2, and CS20 are all of the C++ courses that are offered at my college. There is nothing else to take other than a Linux class and a Pearl class which are both less relevant than C++. I am also currently taking CS21 which is Assembly Language Programming. I have taken every relevant programming course that I can, including the highest level C++ course that is offered. So I dont think that is the problem. Furthermore, I emailed the Berkeley Engineering Department specifically asking if the reason for my denial was because of that math course not being completed at the same college, and they told me “no.” I have it in writing. So that cannot be it either.

I got a pretty good draft of an appeal letter together. If anyone wants to take a look at it let me know. I am also having the head of the engineering department at my school, a Stanford graduate, write me a letter of rec.

Good luck on your appeal process! I wish you the best!

I’ll take a look at it if you need readers.

Remember to talk about how you’ll contribute!

Rejected from UC Berkeley on appeal.

Still waiting on decision from UCLA

^ wow…

OP, I’m so sorry (and very surprised) to hear that. I thought you stood an excellent chance. Thank you for the update. I hope you hear good news from UCLA! I had no idea EECS was that competitive…

Sorry to hear about UCB. Good luck with LA.

i declined my ucla spot. u can haz it

Rejected from UCLA on appeal.

Looks like im going to UC San Diego

Common Berkeley an UCLA.
dude, go to San Diego, get all As, do research, get good LORs. Apply CALTech, Stanford, MIT … for grad program

Hey I’m sorry about your rejections. Could I take a look at your essays and appeals?

So did they give you a reason for your rejection?

The College of Engineering is extremely selective. When I visited UC Berkeley and took a seminar with an admissions committee member, she clearly stated that the average GPA just to be competitive in Engineering is 3.8 alone. You are ahead of that - congratulations to you, but there may have been other applicants that have a 4.0.

Also, they highly stress that all prerequisites for engineering students be completed at the time of the application review process. This could not be more important. They state, “Only applicants who have completed 100% of these required courses will be
considered for admission.”

You didn’t complete General Chemistry by fall 2012- that may have played against you. You don’t have Organic Chemistry completed either! You also didn’t take Cell Biology, or general Biology courses. or Plant Biology and Diversity. You were supposed to complete ONE Natural Science by Fall 2012 (I can only assume).

It sounds a bit ridiculous, but they really don’t like it when engineering students are still in progress of their prereqs in spring prior to transfer. They told me at their seminar in Berkeley.

I got into engineering and I had 3 pre reqs in the soring

What kind of engineering did you get accepted to? What was your GPA?
