FWIW, this led me to review my knowledge of WW1 and WW2. It is no surprise to me that I get my current triggers to check things out from SNL. It was a surprise to me that I referenced Empire of the Sun and Sound of Music for the World War 2.

Ok I’m going to run and duck after this post but some of those questions should have been asked on the Miss America pageant. I’m sure the answers would have been varied.

Does it bother you at all that we have an electorate that is this ignorant?

The first one I can understand, the general population is stupid, but the silver dollar one, what the hell? He says that this is a precious metal, selling a silver oz for a dollar!. HE tells them all thats its precious metal yet they don’t understand?

RIPRORIN–yes, it bothers me to see such ignorance. ;)

This is dumb. Even otherwise intelligent people can freeze on the spot.

Count me as another who thinks it’s sad that we purposely seek out people to make fun of.

I worked in a senator’s office so I’m well aware of how ignorant some people can be but I don’t necessarily think this is anything but freezing and careful editing.

Dragooner, I guess they don’t know what “precious” means? How can you not have at least a general idea what the price of silver is.

My god, did they take history class, how does someone not know that we became independent from Great Britain? CHINA

Young people know a LOT of stuff that I have no clue about (such as what the heck is Whatsapp). I know a lot about about Churchill and Mandela, which is in fact utterly useless.

Yes, it’s so stupid to know anything about history and current events, lol. It’s so much better to know the latest with the Kardashians or the Beverly Hills Housewives.

Ask most of these folks questions on these topics and they’ll nail them.

ok, thanks for wasting my time with this thread. I watched 6 seconds of the first video, “When the founding fathers signed the declaration of independence in NINETEEN seventy -six” I stopped right there. Who is the idiot? Then, the second video. I wouldn’t buy ANYTHING from this guy at any price. He has “conman” written all over him. If he asked me to buy a $50 bill for 5 cents I would politely decline. What would that prove?

And, he said “random passerbyers” or maybe he said “random passerbuyers” I couldn’t tell from listening to him.

I would have gladly taken a chance on the silver coin for a dollar.

It bothers me that these people vote and get to decide the direction of this country. How easily are these people swayed by what they here in the media?..What direction does the media lean?..scary how easily this can happen.

Lots of folks don’t even bother registering to vote and too few of registered voters even bother voting.

Quick, before patting self on back:

‘How many people have served as president of the United States?’

or,

‘What’s the name of the guy wearing a hat on the back of a $2 bill?’

53! And Obama is the second African American president. That’s why he was so important. People didn’t think it would happen again.

Edit: That’s embarrassing. He’s actually the 47th.

I’ll believe a video such as this if it’s shot as one consistent scene…
But obviously with every other person it’s the whole other scene.
For all I know (And this is most likely the case) he interviewed hundreds of people and chose selected few who couldn’t answer and created those videos.

44 people have served as president of the United States. The only reason I know that is for one of his birthdays George W. Bush gave is father a hat which had “41” embroidered on it and he had his own hat with “43” on it.

Who is wearing a hat on the back of a $2 bill? My first reaction was to say that’s a trick question b/c the back of a $2 bill is a picture of the Continental Congress and the Declaration of Independence. After looking at a $2 bill now my answer is don’t know, don’t care.

Turns out I was wrong to the way the question was asked about number of presidents - the number is 43. Grover Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms and is often cited as the 22nd and 24th president. Still don’t care who is wearing the hat on the back of the two-dollar bill.

I’ve been reading this throughout the day and all I can think of is that there are many countries across the globe where these questions have loaded answers, the press would only be interviewing people who had the correct ones, and perhaps those typical citizens would be ringers to sway a point of view. Perhaps talking to someone with a recorder would be a terrible risk, perhaps.

We are not perfect, nor are we all interested in US history and facts. That does not make your fellow citizens less valuable as a whole, nor does it make the people who know the isolated facts more valuable. Hubris is as big a fault as wanton ignorance.

Happy 4th everyone. We live in a big, loud, gregarious moshpit of a country. But our military will never walk into the White House and choose our president. Our government will never send soldiers to shoot everyone in our neighborhood. So God ( or Gaia, or whom/whatever) bless us every one, today.

I have an issue with how he framed the questions … although I do have to admit that some people got it wrong even when he didn’t feed them any incorrect information in his intro.
