Wow had no idea voice lessons were that expensive after college! Yikes! How often does your child take lessons @Dusing2 ? Just on an as needed for audition basis?
Hmmm…I don’t think those prices are expensive at all @theaterwork at all. My daughter is still in high school and her voice lessons are $120 an hour each week and she takes dance at our local studio for around 15 hours each week but also supplements with classes at Broadway Dance Center in NYC and Millenium Dance in Philadelphia for around $17 to $20 per hour. I’m not sure if it depends on where you are located though, for voice lessons, but $120 is the norm here in The NJ/Philly area.
Let me rephrase…I don’t mean they are not “expensive” because it is…I meant that it is the norm. If anyone knows of less expensive, but reputable, voice teacher in my area, let me know…please? Lol
Well yes I suppose it depends where you are geographically. My D gets private voice at school because she goes to an arts high school & her discipline is MT. So, we haven’t paid for voice for 2 yrs now but we didn’t pay that! Her teachers have all been more then qualified so I’m guessing it’s geography . We also only had 1/2 hr lesson but I’m thinking in school she’s there longer. I think your dance class prices are about the same as ours here. That’s very interesting to know. I suppose it all goes by what the market will bear and demand etc
That’s great that your daughter can get private voice lessons at school…I’m envious!!!
We pay $90 an hour in the midwest
It’s good that she gets them at school @DVCmember but I end up paying for other school stuff anyways so it’s a wash really. She really likes her teacher so that’s great though. @toowonderful ouch that’s a lot too! For an hour lesson before we would have paid $40…that was by a teacher who had degrees in voice as well as education from a well respected university .
I’m in the Midwest and it is $45-60 in my area for an hour. I pay $40/hr because my S’s instructor has chosen to not pass any cost increases over last 4 years on to him, but the rest of the studio is paying $50/hour. He is well credentialed and very well know in our neck of the woods. My S auditioned for a school nearly 4 hours away from our area and one of the audition panel members knew him and had a nice conversation about him and his training. I know the larger city 30 minutes away varies drastically depending on what part of the city.
My daughter took voice lessons for five years prior to college. We lived in Vermont. Her voice teacher in VT split his week between VT and NYC, where he was on faculty in a MT program. He has a doctorate in vocal music education. His students have performed at the Metropolitan Opera, City Opera, many European opera houses, and in hundreds of Broadway shows and national tours. His students have won Oscar Hammerstein, MAC, Drama Desk, Emmy and Tony awards. Many students have gone onto renown college programs and conservatories.
When my D took lessons prior to college (she graduated high school 10 years ago and so these fees have likely gone up since then)…this voice teacher gave voice lessons in small groups. The lessons were for 90 minutes and besides vocal technique, each student worked on their own song. The lessons were $30. In their final year of high school, they got private lessons. These were for 60 minutes and cost $60.
When D graduated college, and did take voice lessons from time to time (but hasn’t in the last couple of years) in NYC, I know it cost at least $100. I think you’d be hard pressed to find voice lessons for under $100 from strong voice teachers in NYC these days.
D’s voice teacher is on the faculty at a well known conservatory- so is probably getting above the standard going rate in our town
@bisouu I assume acting, like singing and dancing are all skills that need to be exercised or you lose your muscle tone. I suspect that even Meryl Streep still takes classes. But of course, she can afford them. How our kids will afford the rates described above is a whole other question. I suspect most of them cannot much like soozieVT’s daughter described above.
We never paid more than $60/hour for private voice lessons unless you count whatever we are actually paying per hour for the private voice lessons at NYU. um…$500 per hour? I actually have no idea and try hard not to think about it.
My voice lessons (in Chicago) are $150 a lessons, every other week. For dance, I take classes in a studio for about $15 a class. All taught by working professionals in the Chicago area.
I don’t think an actor is ever finished with their training. Even the most seasoned professionals will get voice, dance and acting lessons from time to time. Sometimes it is to prepare for a specific role. Other times it is just to stay polished. But training will be something they will always want and need to do to keep their skills sharp. This is not something unique to the theater. Many professions require continuing education of some sort each year. So you may want to think about it that way. But if you are budgeting for post-grad life, I would definitely have a line item in their for training. What form this training takes - who knows? I know some kids who hop from free introductory class to free class trying out different dance and exercise studios. Some kids will take a workshop or series of classes on say, improv, with a particular company. It may only last for 6 weeks or even 1 day. Some may take regular voice lessons. Others may choose to take them quarterly. I even know some kids who are downloading stuff on the internet and getting together in small groups to take classes virtually. It will really just depend on what they are doing, what they are needing and what their schedule and budget will allow. But do plan on continued training after college in some form. And make them budget for it
In the SF Bay Area, Vocal Technique runs about $80 an hour; Vocal Performance about $100 an hour.
My D has had 2 voice teacher’s in her high school years. (We moved to another city, but both cities are in the same Midwest state and are near each other.) Like @toowonderful ;), one is a faculty member of a well-known conservatory and was a faculty member at another, too, that is discussed here, and lessons are $90/hour. One is closely connected to another well-known program discussed here, and lessons are $45/45 minutes.
When I’m at home in Toronto, I pay $70/hour for a voice lesson. I’m paying a student rate and would expect to pay no less than $90 after I graduate in a few years (in Toronto or in any major city). I agree with what @vvnstar has suggested with regard to planning for class as an expense post-grad: I began a “get CanadianMTgirl to Minneapolis/Chicago/DC” fund this summer by putting away a certain percentage of my paycheques, and found I had to reevaluate how much I’m saving at least once so that I’ll not only have enough money to move, but enough to continue my training.
@CanadianMTgirl - I love that you spell “cheque” the Canadian way
@toowonderful I may have stopped saying “sore-y” instead of “sorry”, but there are some Canadianisms I’ll never lose!
So 5 years later Canadian actors will still queue to get their paycheque, eh? Good to know.
Regarding the high cost of voice lessons in NYC and suburbs:
To put these numbers in perspective, keep in mind that the going rate for many private reading or math tutors for young children is about $85 to $115/ hr. And by the time the kids are in high school and preparing for the SAT’s, that rate probably starts at $125 minimally for an experienced tutor.
So that aligns very closely with the rate a NYC voice/ music teacher charges.
