55+ communities

Another perspective . . . my MIL had to go into a nursing home due to late stage Parkinson’s. Her condo is in a very restrictive 55+ community in Boca. Beautiful area, but what a pain.

Another relative here in SoFlo lost home to foreclosure, and can’t stay at MIL’s empty condo because of the restrictions (kid/pet).

We can’t sell MIL’s condo because of nursing home issues (modest condo, but still). So it sits there empty.

It’s a mess.

Looking back I wish we had encouraged her to buy somewhere a little less restrictive. Then again we never foresaw what has happened to her and I’m not sure how we would have. She was one of the most active, engaging people I have ever met.

I would go into it with very long-term possibilities in mind.

@swimcatsmom - I think Hampton Lake is next. Trying to fit in a few visits in between other activities. The communities that are fully built out and gated are impossible to drive thru - unless you are with a realtor. And we are not interested in that step yet.

I have an uncle who did very well for himself and finds it awkward to be asked about it all the time. He and Aunt stayed in an upscale 55+ community for a month last year and he was thrilled. They did so many activities. He said “No one there wants to talk about what you used to do, only what you are doing today/tonight!”

Many things to consider. We moved to Tampa, FL 3 years ago for retirement. Learned a lot.

The Villages- recent article about how it is good for lesbians- as long as they are Republicans. Surprised me.

Single story house- yes! We’re only getting older. Older houses with “good bones” and layout can easily be updated (see some of my old posts about our pink house renovations)- flooring, doorknobs et al.

Home owners associations. We got lucky with local realtors who knew the ins and outs of how well managed various developments in our area are run. We wanted a nongated community, found one in our thousands of homes development in the part of town we chose. Gated communities become private- this means any street and sewer problems may become the owners’, not the city’s responsibility. Good drainage and worn out infrastructure can be an issue. Needing to be let in and out- yuck. Plus, with all of the service people coming and going I’m not so sure there is really that much security.

In this area it is easy to find services. Lawn care, insect care, pool care, house cleaning- easy to get. Add up the costs of an all inclusive HOA fee and paying yourself.

Consider the amenities. If you want groups to be with a 55+ community may be for you. If you are a reader consider the county’s library system. We would have paid $100/person/year to be able to use the great Hillsborough library system if we were over the county line in Pasco County.

Demographics. See above. We would be in trouble in The Villages- politics. Ethnic groups mean different foods and cultural activities. Like the restaurants here and Indians here are a good change for Indian H. Can’t get the same groceries I was used to- brands and types in some instances. Worth going to grocery stores in target area to see prices (high here!), brands and bakery/deli/meats et al. Churches in area.

Summers here- like winters up north in that indoor activities prevail. Easier to drive/dash into stores in heavy rain than snow, however. Our little street has several of our age- some retired and those who go up north for a month or more summers. Find that in Florida when you don’t up north. Also Florida has so many seniors there are many activities in mainstream areas (they serve us better than the school kids, sigh). Senior classes-Ollie- as well. Audit USF courses for free (over 60). You do not need to be in a special community to get the same benefits, depending on where you choose.

Another factor. Here there are many transplants, of all ages, from out of the region. Find plenty from the Midwest as well as up the east coast. Plus immigrants from many places. In some areas you would want to be among seniors to fit in and not be an outsider. Larger areas have more diversity- matters if you do not fit the local demographic mode.

There are several mobile home communities in this area. Not for me. Different lifestyle no matter how middle class.

Perhaps renting before buying, or at least several lengthy stays to see how you really like the area of interest- in all seasons.

Interesting and helpful post. Thank you! I must admit the politics is something that concerns me. I Live in probably the reddest state in the nation (not a single county went blue in the last election, even Texas had some). I’m not vocal about my beliefs which do not fit in around here but am surrounded by people who are very vocal. I respect other people’s views, but would like to be around some people who either share my views and others who at least are able to respect them!

I would also very much like a bit more diversity as far as ethnicity and also more acceptance of different lifestyles. Very little - almost none - where I live. I am from London originally and have lived in several other countries so it is a very different culture to what I was used to.

PM me for future plans if you’re at all interested. We did a lot of research. There are resources which show county by county party voting- look them up. A lot more I could tell. Seattle was on the radar but the weather (and earthquakes), plus felt hemmed in by the coast. Maryland- weather. California- earthquakes, cost of living. Other states- demographics. No place is perfect. No desert dryness for me. I looked at some books with lists about many cities. They commented on so many things. Numbers of churches (none for us) but never the type- Bible Belt wrong for us (they don’t want us either). Many places work for standard white bread America members of Jewish or Christian religions, but not us. Being part of a community is hard when you do not belong to various groups. Despite disliking several aspects of Florida (education and summers for example) we find a lot to suit us. Refreshing to see the diversity here- even if I feel sorry for women all covered up in the heat and humidity at stores. Nice to have plenty of older people so the newspapers are relevant and the services as well. Tax structure favors us as well.
