7th grade SAT and ACT scores

mysonsdad:

Taking the test each year had really taken the stress factor out for my younger D. I think that having the process and results “de-mystified” helps her focus on doing well, rather than getting worked up about the test’s impact on her future!

My eldest D, on the other hand, took it in 8th to qualify for honors in HS, and then Junior yr. She was soooo intimidated by the idea of the test - thankfully she made a 31 Junior year and said “Enough!”

6th grade: 610 Math, 560 CR, 540 W
7th grade; 710 Math, 630 CR, 600 W

Not a bad improvement for 1 year. :)

6th
cr 410
math 530

8th
cr 520
Math 610

11th
cr 680
math 800

Daughter took ACT for Duke TIP last spring as a 12 year old 7th grader. The only prep she did was look over the practice tests in the booklet we received. I told her not to worry about the advanced math she had never seen. She did go online and read comments about how the science section was really more like high level science “reading” of lots of charts and graphs so she wasn’t intimidated by it.

Reading:31; Math:25; English Usage:26; Science :29; Composite score: 28 Grand!

7th grade: 24 Composite :(. [excuse] I was sick that day [/excuse].
9th grade: 216 PSAT.

24 is pretty good for a 12 year old.

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to ask a quick question. I’m in 8th grade right now in the U.S., and I qualified for the Duke Talent Search last year in 7th grade, but I wasn’t permitted to take the test because I left my school I.D. at home. (bummer) So can I take the SAT test in the 8th grade? Would somebody please tell me the enrollment process (if I can enroll) and if I can qualify for any centers. Thank you everyone who answers!! :)

@ScarlettMoon: Check the TIP site. We’re in the JHU CTY geography, and I know that 8th graders can take the SAT to try and qualify for base CTY and SET levels — but the qualifying scores (though SET is by age, not grade) are ratcheted up a few clicks for the kids in 8th grade vs. 7th.

i took the SAT in november 2007 of 8th grade when i was 12 to qualify for the SET/CTY program
i received CR: 620, W: 720, M: 710 with a 10 essay for a 2050
i took the ACT in february 2008 of 8th grade when i was 13. i got lucky and just made the cutoff for SET/CTY’s grand ceremony
i received M: 32, R: 33, S: 36, W: 35 with an 8 essay for a 34 composite
i decided to take the ACT again in june 2010 sophomore year
i received a perfect 36, 36 in all sections and subsections but an 11 on the essay. in short, that means NO SAT!!! (well, maybe for the PSAT merit stuff)
i also took 7 AP tests and got all 5s: bio (8th), chem (9th), calc bc (10th), phys c mech (10th), phys c e&m (10th), comp sci (10th), enviro (10th)

I’m in 7th grade and taking it this spring through CTY… All of my friends think I’m nuts. Any tips?
I took some other test through CTY when I was in fourth grade and scored pretty high… I can’t remember how high though.

7th grade:
CR 730
M 650
W 750

11th grade:
CR 800
M 780
W 790

If you get the chance to take the SAT early for any sort of program, I think it’s a great idea to try. I felt so much better about SATs and PSATs than a ton of my peers did because I already knew what to expect. It doesn’t matter this early in the game if you do that well.

@laughingworld: Forget what your friends say, take it. There’s a very good chance you won’t be the only 7th grader at the test site.

Duchessofpadua is right: experience with standardized tests early on helps minimize and intimidation factor that might occur down the road. I can say that taking the SAT in 7th grade helped my daughter walk into the SSAT (prep school admission test) this fall with serious confidence…and her scores reflected that.

Thanks. :). I’m definitely taking it, but I’m super nervous. Well, better now than in my junior or senior year, right?

I took ACT for Duke TIP in 7th grade and had a 24
I took it again in ninth and had a 28 (Talk about a bummer of an improvement.)
I took it again as a sophomore and got a 34. (Much better! =))

haha this thread is pretty funny.

Ok so I got a 1790 SAT in 7th grade (560 M, 600 CR, 630 W)

(My school doesn’t offer algebra 'till 8th)

And 8th Grade I got a 201 on the PSAT (64 M, 68 W, 69 CR)

As far as preparation goes, I did a practice test for each and that was it.

Sooooo, my question for YOU is what do YOU think, based on your results and the results from this thread, I will get on my 11th grade SAT? Hahaha

I took it today- scores are supposed to be posted January 22nd.

People in the states take the SAT in 7th grade???

Wow, maybe if I had done that I would have done better come grade 12 (I am from Canada by the way)

@whitneybenning: It’s optional, of course. I think many people take it to be considered for talent searches like Johns Hopkins’ CTY and Duke Tip programs (which offer online and summer classes), but my daughter reported meeting another young person who said he was taking it as practice for the real one…even though it is still years away.

@laughingworld: if you are not over 13, you cannot check score online and have to wait for mail report.

You may call the College Board and they will tell you your score on the phone. They charge us US$13 for this service. I don’t know how long it takes to receive the report by mail in the US. It takes quite a while for us as we are living in Hong Kong.
