<p>Poet…you are implying that a lawyer will somehow be able to help this student become independent for financial aid purposes. It is highly unlikely that this will be possible. The criteria for independence for FAFSA purposes are quite clear…and a lawyer can’t change them.</p>
<p>Also, this student has two issues…financial independence and residency for instate tuition purposes. Even IF (and it’s a big if) the student could be independent for financial aid on the FAFSA, he still might NOT be considered an instate resident in his new state for tuition purposes.</p>
<p>This student is implying that there are significant potential or real abuse issues. The time to document these and do something about them is NOW.</p>
