<p>I think the reason to have a car at Stanford is not to use it around Palo Alto, or San Francisco even (although it IS tempting to drive up there rather than train). But there are a whole bunch of really beautiful places on the Peninsula coast, in Marin, and in the Napa and Sonoma valleys, that are much harder (and sometimes impossible) to get to unless someone has a car.</p>
