These are not sources. Admins are sources. Guidance counselors with experience in this matter are sources. Do you fall into either of these categories? If not, what is your source? In my experience, and obviously that of others, your information is incorrect.
Should I take a study hall senior year?
At selective colleges, a study hall in place of a fifth core course is usually the difference between most demanding and very demanding. Protect the rating unless health or logistics genuinely require the space.

In short, you don’t have a reliable source to support your original claim that taking study hall disqualifies applicants from top-tier institutions. Rather than backing up that assertion, you shifted the focus to a scenario that doesn’t apply to the original poster, provided irrelevant links—including one from a consultant whose expertise is questionable—and hoped no one would catch it.
I strongly suggest sticking to factual information and directing future comments toward helping the original poster rather than spreading unverified claims.
Guidance counselors assign rigor ratings based on the parameters and offerings of their particular HS. I can’t imagine a scenario where a guidance counselor would downgrade a student’s rigor based on taking a REQUIRED study hall – the OP stated upthread that the guidance counselor required the student to schedule a study hall period as a condition of approving a schedule which includes 5 APs and orchestra. The student’s projected senior year schedule is both full and rigorous.
We wish the student the best in the college admission process.
From the OP She is taking 5 AP classes this year (plus orchestra
So…this kid is already taking five AP courses plus orchestra which sounds very demanding per your description.
I think this student has gotten advice from their school counselor (this schedule with a study hall), and is not objecting to this for this student.
So…in my opinion, this student is fine.
Thank you!
A post was split to a new thread: How do colleges consider HS co-ops
Fun thread but as stated study hall is not an issue.
