mom2-
You had posted a question about Tulane’s scholarship applications. Yes, too late for the DHS application, but the Community Service scholarship applications are due Jan 15. Not too late for that.

ahhh…good to know. thanks. Is that available to int’l students?

Don’t recall. I am sure its explained on the college website.

Apologies, but I did LOL when I read that Alabama reminded you of So Cal!

And I did a quick look at the many “top cities to live in” [AOL Search](<a href=“best cities to live in - AOL Search Results”>best cities to live in - AOL Search Results)
Not a lot of overlap acress each of the surveys. The criteria must vary a lot. Not meaning to minimize the opportunities in Huntsville. It is a cute town.

^^^

Did you look at the link that I provided? [No. 1: Huntsville, Alabama - Kiplinger.com](No. 1: Huntsville, Alabama | Kiplinger)

And, yes, Huntsville did remind me of Orange County. I lived in OC for over 40 years. I still spend about 1/4 of the year there, because my whole family is there and I have to “take turns” helping my aging parents. So, I still have my “hand on the pulse” so to speak about OC. Of course, OC has become very crowded and trafficky -

When I say that Huntsville reminded me of OC, what I mean is this. Many of the same stores/restaurants, etc. And, like OC, many people are transplants. When I grew up in OC, everyone seemed to be from somewhere else - the midwest or the NE. That’s the way it is in Huntsville. Nearly everyone is a transplant.

But, I don’t blame you for LOL about my comment. Before I moved here, my H had been here several times and when he told me that Huntsville reminded him of OC (with more trees, less crowds, and less traffic), I didn’t believe him either. lol

Yes, read the Kiplingers, but also read the Money Mag, USNews, Forbes, etc, which list other cities.

Agreed, when it comes to availability of chain stores and the large number or transplants, I think that describes most of the US!! LOL

^^^

You know…that getting to be more and more true. With all the moving around of Americans and nationwide chain stores and restaurants, various regions are becoming more and more blended. That’s why when you’re in decent sized cities (all over the US), many can feel rather “the same.” lol

However, a city like Huntsville that has something like Cummings Research Park with all of its Fortune 500 companies and Fortune 1000 industries, you are going to have a very blended community.

^^ Agreed. Families are getting spread out all over the place. Ours is an increasingly mobile society. I do recall, when taking s’s to Space camp (or Aviation Challenge, I forget), having an opportunity to stop at a chain store for something I’d wanted to pick up before we left home. Easy to do with the availability of the chain stores, for sure.

I also recall one year, taking one s to space camp and the other to a scout camp nearby. Problem was, the day we were dropping off s at scout camp coincided with the day of the very last Alabama concert, and the venue was on the same road as scout camp. I had visions of Woodstock (I am dating myself, I know, LOL). So, we headed off for scout camp at the wee early hours to avoid the anticipated mass of traffic we (I) expected for the concert. We ended up arriving at the scout campsite so early, we had the great fortune of being able to help set up the campsites and such, and after doing so I still got back to Huntsville with nary a sign of the traffic I’d imagined. We still chuckle about that, LOL!

Hi all,

I thought I’d revive this link since many of the schools listed here have rolling admissions that often put up their applications in the summer.

I know that Alabama put theirs up today (July 1st). [Apply for Admission - Undergraduate Admissions - The University of Alabama](<a href=“How to Apply – Admissions”>http://www.apply.ua.edu/)
Bama still has their fabulous assured scholarships for those who have the stats and apply for scholarships before the deadline. http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/

The schools on this thread are schools that usually have “formula admissions.” They often don’t require essays or teacher recs. If you have the stats, you’re admitted.

So, some kids can get an early start by applying now and having an acceptance in hand within a few weeks after the school receives your app, scores, and transcript.

Having an acceptance in hand this summer can relieve a lot of stress during the application season as you wait to hear about your spring acceptances.

:)

bump…

Maybe some more schools can be added…

University of Oregon- No essay if you have above a 3.4 UW GPA and have completed 16 college prep courses. This would also guarantee you to be automaticaly accepted to UO. I don’t beleive that they require letters of rec. App took me about 15 minutes to complete.

Clemson University- No essay & I believe no letters of rec are required. App took me about 15minutes to complete.

Southern Utah University

Bumping because some may be interested in some schools with some quick and EZ apps.

Fairleigh Dickinson University in NJ.
Very easy online application. Recommendations and essays are not required. Apply early and a few scholarships are guaranteed.

Binghamton! Literally no supplement and they only need a counselor rec. I think it was $55.

Oh, and the FDU application is free if done early enough. Bonus!

Furman University is a top school in the south and it is one tough school academically you will fail in a heart beat even if you are a star in HS.They require SAT/ACT top grades top rank don’t be fooled by their published stats not true. Furman is very academically competative they cut no slack at all great strong school conservative, safe beautiful and very preppy and wonderfully southern football ,grits and friendly people but tough professors.NOT a safety by any means.good luck.

Bumping this thread…

Many of these schools also have scholarship deadlines that are approaching.

many of these schools have Dec 1st scholarship deadlines so bumping it up.

@mom2collegekids – On your recommendation, National Merit Semifinalist DS applied to Bama and did the scholarship app, too. No one yet has asked us to have collegeboard.com send SAT scores, but I assume they want 'em! DS just received two Nov. subject SAT scores, so I’m thinking maybe we should have collebeboard.com send both reasoning and subject scores today or within next couple of days. But what if they don’t arrive by Dec. 1? (collegeboard.com can be slow sometimes.) My impression is that most colleges consider that you’ve applied once you’ve completed the application – supplemental materials such as SAT scores can lag a little behind the app deadline. Is this true at Bama? or do those SAT scores have to arrive by Dec. 1 for scholarship consideration?

Thanks so much for alerting us to Bama! We never would have known. I’m not sure whether we ever received mailings from them. We did receive mailings from Arizona State, which apparently funds and coddles National Merit Semifinalists / Finalists to the nth degree. But I think Arizona would be too great a culture / climate shock for our kids, born and bred in the NC woods.

BTW–DS is practicing Catholic, very active in Life Teen; has been accepted at several Catholic colleges, but money is an issue. Is there a vibrant Catholic / Christian community at Bama? I looked it up, and it appeared that there was – but, as you seem to know Bama so well firsthand, I thought you maybe could tell us more! Thanks again!!

“Well, I think this is how it works…If you’ve applied to several schools, you’ve noticed that some are super EZ, while some are tedious…”

Amen! We missed a super-early deadline for a subsatntial scholarship at Christendom College because the basic app required three essays, while the scholarship app required another 1,000 -word essay. DS likes writing essays and does well at it, but at the time (early October) he had a lot going on and didn’t have time for four essays – especially as he was also expected to interview and the whole nine yards, all by Oct 15, IIRC. Oy!
