A Message from the Chair

I, too, am puzzled by NYQ12’s reaction, especially as I thought he/she was going to Rutgers Mason Gross for a BFA in acting. :)

^^That also confused me as I recalled that NYQ12 is attending another school in the fall…Rutgers, and not NYU. Not sure why this member is therefore “scared.”

I wonder if we will be able to transfer from Strasberg into the New Studio for MT. Do you think they might disallow transfers into the New Studio for the first couple of years until they sort things out?

clay, I think it depends on when the New Studio is up and running.

Clay, my understanding is that for CAP21 and Strasberg students…at the end of Tisch’s contract with those studios (which is not for at least the next two years for incoming students), you will have the option of joining the New Studio (unless you choose a different studio option). But if you go to the new studio, you don’t have to audition because it will be akin to having stayed in your own studio all four years which is typically allowed in all Tisch studios and no audition is required to advanced into junior year in one’s own studio. That is why they are saying you won’t be required to audition in order to continue onto the New Studio if you are coming from CAP or Strasberg and the training there ends.

Now, whether someone coming from Strasberg is automatically in MT, is a different story. I am sure anyone in CAP gets to continue MT training. Whether a Strasberg student continues with the acting track or is in a MT one is hard to say. But I don’t really see this as a concern you need to have at this time because had NO changes occurred at Tisch with regard to the studios, you would have either stayed in Strasberg for four years or auditioned to get into another studio (such as CAP). So, if you have to audition to do MT, that would not be different than you would have had to have done anyway. But let’s remember that Strasberg itself has some singing and somse dance and puts on musicals too. And students from any studio can audition for all Tisch musicals.

EDIT…perhaps your question is asking about changing studios within your first two years to the New Studio? I doubt it very much because all Tischies need to do their primary studio for two years and Strasberg is your primary studio.

By the way, the new studio would have to be up and running in time for the fall of 2010 for the next incoming class (who cannot enter Strasberg or CAP). Now, they could just start out with just that year’s class and then add the advanced studio when you guys need to switch over after your primary studio years are up.

Well I was originally planning to transfer into the Playwrights MT Practicum or CAP21 after 2 years at Strasberg, so now I’m thinking of doing 2 years of the New Studio for MT. Now if it’s for acting it won’t be the end of the world I guess, as long as I get some singing and dancing. But I’m thinking since they are making the programs WITHIN the schools now it will be easier for me to make my concerns and needs known to the faculty and they might have a greater ability to adjust classes + faculty. That’s what Patricia Decker told me, that they will be able to compensate for students’ weaknesses.

I wonder if the Tisch New Studio will be having its own showcase.

clay, I don’t have inside information but since you could have (in the past) auditioned to do advanced studio in CAP to study MT or for PH to do the MT Practicum, I would think you could audition to do the MT track in the New Studio for advanced studio. It makes logical sense. It is there to replace CAP after all. Let me just say that transferring into CAP for advanced studio was never an easy feat and they only took a handful. I have a feeling the easier bet would have been on the PH MT Practicum. But I don’t think you really need to worry about this yet as it is two years away at this point.

Soozievt, have you heard anything about the Playwrights MT Practicum? Is it good?
I’ve been in contact with an NYU student (who’s graduated but was in CAP21 for 3 years) who did the playwrights MT practicum for a year (it only lasts a year) and he seemed to think very highly of the program, led by John Ruocco, who also happened to be my auditor. lol

My D has friends who have done PH’s MT Practicum and I believe it is quite good indeed. Some are very talented MT actors. You will see at Tisch that there are many talented MT students in the Acting studios. In fact, many are cast in the Tisch musicals. The MT talent is not confined to the CAP21 studio!

Okay - SORRY everyone I didn’t mean to be negative… I am going to MGSA this fall but was admitted to CAP 21 and I heard of this news the other day and wanted to check out the information on CC. I just think that this is very interesting - in other words… It will be interesting to see what happens. I guess after going through this process I am a little college obsessed and am intrigued by all these programs still. The letter that was posted on here just makes the future of CAP and Strasberg students seem a little questionable. Although there are great things on there that they are planning to do!..

NYQ12, congratulations on your wonderful successes in the college audition process, and I have to say that you are far from the only person who is already through the process but is still addicted to these discussion threads/forums! :)
