I just realized something. S3 thinks he’s a pirate. So he definitely has a hook.

However, it’s made of plastic.

Do you think he should mention this in his essay? Or will his GC cover it in her recommendation? Also, he just turned six. Do you think that will help, or hurt? He doesn’t play pirates on the school team; it’s more of an individual EC. Should I get him a private coach?

Harriet, I’m afraid his pirate EC is weak at this point. He needs to be a Seaman’s award-winning pirate for it to have much effect regarding admissions.

What I want to know is, will he be a, ahem, patch on other applicants? And is he practicing his skills on the boat that’s taking violadad’s Inuit/Polynesian didgeridoo-playing iditerod contestant D to Tasmania? Is that his summer plan? Does it fall under community service in an exotic location that will look good on his resume? There isn’t a pond closer to home where he can practice, is there?

Harrrrr harrr. Not a patch on him, I daresay.

The capturing a damsel-in-distress EC is a little stale, I think. Also, I’m not sure if I have time to look for a closer pond. I already quit my job to drive him to this one.

Do you think he can get special accommodations for testing with his parrot on his shoulder? I resent the suggestion that “pieces of eight” squawked in his ear gives him an unfair advantage on the math sections.

He’s decided to be Batman now. We’re so proud and excited! He already has a (bat)hook. And I hear that lots of Pathways are looking for guys who wear tights.

Does anybody know a private crimefighting coach?

Just want to say, thanks for all the helpful replies, not that I’ve read any of’em, of course. I mean, I already know I’m right about A, or was it B? Whatever. Clearly I’m just looking for confirmation.

I did see the post about pirates, and you know, Harriet, that’s been done to death. Literally. go with the Batman hook. Or else Spiderman. There’s a lot on the Web about that.

Why are you all berating Violadaughter? Surely you understand that not winning the Iditarod was the fault of the DOGS…not her. She simply needs better dogs. Oh…maybe she needs a better sled. Isn’t University of Alaska part of the Ivy League?

I’m so glad I found this thread because we are also really looking for an answer. The problem is that we went ahead and forged a pathway C. Even though people told us that Pathway C was unlikely to lead to success we thought our brilliant D would be the exception. She has the Catwoman thing down pat after all. I guess they were looking for Xena this year because FAFSA just didn’t give her enough money.

I don’t know how we can be expected to pay the $35,000 COA at the OOS public or the $47,000 COA at her first choice private. With the current economy it’s likely that our income will go down to about $400,000 this year.

We are wondering if we can go back about 1/2 way up Pathway C, veer left, and then just skip over the small distance between Pathways B and C to get back to B. Would this allow her to get instate tuition? We did spend 2 days in the state while doing college visits. Has anyone tried this? Did it work?

The other alternative is forge ahead on Pathway C, but stop, make a little loop, known as G, about 2/3’s of the way down. We think this will make D an independent, and then she continue down Pathway C with the hope that FAFSA will recognize the errors and give her money. Will this work?

DD plays the tuba, harp, and bassoon. She owns all three instruments and has been first chair in all state on all three instruments for three years running (yes…it took some running from seat to seat during the concerts to play all three instruments at the same time). Do you suppose she can get a full ride somewhere? We know this is a substantial hook so I know there is no reason to post her grades or her SAT scores. Oh…we’re from Northern Outer Mongolia…do you suppose that will be geographic diversity? She is a US citizen.

I don’t have any time to read through the previous posts to see if the question ever got answered, so could someone tell me which path is better?

I suggest you check out Expedia or Orbiz or kayak.com. And, while you may want to give in to your helicoptering tendencies, I think a jet plane is the only way to go.

Northern Outer Mongolia is already over-represented. If you could move now, and claim residency in Southwestern Outer Mongolia, that might be a distinct advantage.

Mathmom, only first chair Uba Tuba. :)

PS Rrah, I’m so sorry for your severe financial downturn. Also, your D doesn’t deserve an education anymore. Just thought you’d want to know.

It is not too late for the Inuit/south pacific islander to take up polo. There may also be a EC there, using the ponies in a “Walk, Trot, Read” program with
ESL stableboys.
