A place for folks having stimulus check issues to vent and compare notes

Ds1 got $1,200 yesterday, ds2 didn’t. Same last name, same household.

We haven’t gotten money either.

20 weeks? That’s a long time to wait for some people.

And good point made above…what If you changed banks and closed the account they have on file from your tax return?? Then what?

So dead people got money but how and where does one send the money back?

What happens if you earn under the threshold in one year, but over in the other? Do you have to qualify for both 2018 and 2019 income-wise?

I did see that my parents received a deposit today in their account

Received a check yesterday (Tuesday) for my deceased father. I had filed the final return and he had a refund direct deposit

I’m scratching my head why Social Security recipients are going first?? They did not have any dire impacts, they are still receiving their Social Security checks!!

Finally figured that I do not qualify. And my suddenly laid off daughter is upset that I claimed her as a dependent for last year so she will not receive a check.

We gave our accountant efile auth for 2019 last week, not sure when he filed and if that was close enough to the payout date to affect things. We had overpaid and have not gotten a deposit.
The IRS said not enough info to determine if we qualify.
My recently deceased parent has not received a deposit.
At least two of my adult kids have received a deposit already

Yesterday, H and I received our stimulus payment. It was deposited to the account we had listed on our 2018 return. We have not filed our 2019 tax return yet

Yes, but the SS recipients are the next group. My understanding is that those who received money by direct deposit today was based on tax filing. In fact, it has to be as she received $2400, which was for Married filing jointly; she and my father received separate SS checks, his on the second Wednesday and she on the third Wednesday of the month, into different accounts. His SS was stopped immediately on his death.

This is really frustrating. The waves seem to be “filed, got refund” then “SS etc” then wait for paper check. I don’t know why “filed, owed, paid through debit from bank” should wait for a paper check.

(I won’t say why, besides the wait, that a paper check will bother me so much…)

On the 2020 tax return. This is considered a 2020 credit. I know some people are also getting $500 for a minor child who is no longer eligible (16 in 2018 filing, 18 in 2020) so there will be a line on the 2020 tax forms asking how much you received, how much you should have received, etc. Some people may have made $75k or less in 2018 but much more in 2020.

I don’t know what will happen for the dead people. My mother won’t have to file in 2020 so she may just get to keep it.

@coralbrook

It’s only SS recipients who got a refund that are getting their deposits already.

I just had a convo with a friend who has trying to navigate through this for her mother - who is 97. When she went to the wed application and put in her mom’s info she got the “Payment Status Not Available“. Obviously, her mom gets SS, but her mom owes every year, so the IRS does not have her direct deposit information (she pays by a credit card same as I do so I can get points.) Anyway, in the FAQS it gives explanations for why your payment status isn’t available, among other things. One is if you file SSA 1099 forms the IRS has to get your direct deposit info from SSA. Same if you worked for the railroad (who has their own SS like system.) And they said, they are working on it getting info from these other agencies.

I imagine all the data that has to go from SSA to IRS is immense and likely will take awhile. How long is anyone’s guess.

My friend also told me that the site only updates info once a day so she’s not going to check anymore than that now.

If you don’t claim her in 2020, she’ll get an adjustment when she files in 2021. Delayed for her, but not out of the question.

If your kid did not get it because they were a dependent in 2019 and they file 2020 NOT as a dependent, won’t they get it as a credit on that return? So, delayed, but there eventually?

So I am trying to help my cleaning lady out. She doesn’t have a green card but said she did taxes, some one did it for her and is no longer in the picture. She is so confused I can’t make head or tail. She sent me a picture of her IRS card with the “individual taxpayer identification number”, with a 9 digit number that looks like a SS #, but it’s not a SS card.

Is there a way I can check online if she is eligible or has something coming in? We are not remotely eligible so I don’t even pay attention to the process until now.

@twoinanddone

I keep reading that there is no clawback provision in the CARES Act regarding the EIP (though I haven’t personally read that section of the act).

Wasn’t expecting anything. Completed taxes months ago. Got $1700.

Go to the link “Get My Payment” in the article.

Good luck.

There is a FAQ’s in the web application to get answers to questions.

So since this is a stimulus check and vent thread… I have a vent related to looking into the stimulus check thing. We got a refund last year, which we left in the account to pay towards this year’s taxes (which we will be paying this week ). I didn’t think we are eligible for a relief check, but decided , what the heck- to look at the account that it would likely pay into (where we pay taxes from) and discovered that DH had taken cash out of that account to give to his &(#)W()(*)_)& lowlife brother. Grrrrrr.

I received mine today. The funny thing was that I logged into the IRS portal, waited, then got a response saying that that the transfer would be today – and then logged into my bank account and saw it there. It would have been simpler to check the bank account first – but I didn’t anticipate that it would be today.

FWIW,-- I filed my 2019 return in mid-February and did have a refund. I’m self-employed & file estimated taxes quarterly – so my stimulus money is going straight back to IRS to pay the first quarter estimate. I know that IRS has extended the deadline for payments to July, but I don’t want to set myself up with a bill I can’t pay in 3 months when I have the funds now.

Thanks for the clarification that there are actually going to be line items on the 2020 tax forms trying to clean up underpayments, overpayments and non payments of the stimulus checks. Actually sounds like a total nightmare for the IRS. So moving off Dependent Status in 2020 means someone will get $1200 next year (or more likely 1200 reduced from taxes owed)

Dumb question…if I understand correctly, the qualifying income levels are based on 2020 income?? I thought it was based on 2019. That might make a difference to my situation, although I’d much rather have full employment this year than $1200.

Regarding payment to someone deceased in 2018 or 2019 that received a payment. In my case there are not going to be any more future tax returns, so no way to ‘return’ funds via a 2020 tax return. And, someone said above there is no clawback provision to pull it back out of the account. I’m still going to keep it in the account for awhile in case they try to auto debit the account.
