I’ve been getting a lot of little postcard foldouts from UChicago. Some of them are funny, most are quite eccentric, but the majority are not very informative. Is the purpose of these cards to have some sort of curiosity-piquing shock-value? If so, I suppose it did make me curious, but I don’t feel very knowledgeable of UChicago after reading them…

i think uchicago has abandoned this thread

My brother completed an undergrad double major with a 3.97 gpa. He then completed an MA from the same university with a 4.0 gpa. Then completed an MA from an Ivy League university. He then completed another MA from another major university. He was in a Ph.D. program, nearly completed, from the first university where he completed his BAs and first MA. He was expelled from the program because he plagiarized on the rough draft of a paper and had some mild episodes of anger, nothing criminal or threatening. He admitted this and did not give any excuse. I know that he was undergoing severe depression at the time and that was the cause of his problems and his bad decisions. This was five years since his expulsion and he wants to finish his Ph.D. in the USA or elsewhere.

He has published severe academic articles in scholarly journals in the past few years, gotten treatment for his severe depression, gotten remarried, and works for nonprofits. I know little of the academic world, but can he ever get back into a Ph.D. program anywhere and feel he is doing what he should be doing? Is there any legal recourse? Is there a specific program he should follow, or actions he should take, to get admitted elsewhere? Does anyone have any advice I might give him? I would appreciate any honest and helpful insight anyone might offer. Thank yo

My short essay on the common app got cut off on the preview even though it is 149 words and fit the space. Should I email the full essay or will UChicago be able to see the entire thing?

should I have my guidance counselor call admissions? I know private school counselors do this often, but public high school counselors seldom do and may not realize they have that option. When I sent in app, gpa was only 2.96,ACT is 30, SAT 1290/1600 & 1830/2400. In HS started out weak, not taking things seriously in grades 9&10. Got it together in 11th gr & for that year gpa3.69, honor roll, but overall gpa only 2.96. I work after school, so don’t have ANY extracurriculars @ my high school. But I have passionately pursued hobby of historical, strategic wargaming (not on computer) for last 6 years, and store owner where we play offered me a job last year, giving me the key to open and close the store. He offered me the job, unsolicited by me, based on observing me thru the years & said my maturity, sense of responsibility, integrity etc. impressed him. So, I’ve had a lot of growth and am probably ended this marking period with a 3.6. Didn’t really make a point of all of this in my app. I’d like guidance counselor to relaythis info to admissions or should i write to admissions myself with new info?

Hi! I am an International Junior hopping to attend college in 2014. My college counselor suggested I should try to apply to schools that offer Merit Based Scholarships because my parents have a tight budget which they can afford for my education abroad (between $15 to $20K a year). I know that there are a lot of options around that budget, but my expectations are to get the highest quality education available, and the University of Chicago is my top choice right now. My counselor tells me I have a lot of advantages that would make me eligible for a potential scholarship (if I manage to stay in the path that I am without lowering my grades etc…):

Minority (Latino/Hispanic) from a third world country

100% bilingual (English/Spanish)

Female

First generation to attend college

Top 10% of my class with very good grades (Distingueshed Honor Roll at school). I attend a well recognized American School certified by various American Associations. Not sure of my GPA but my grades average 96%

Various AP classes, and several academic awards

Member of the local chapter National Honors Society

Dale Carnegie Youth Leadership Certification

Member of an International Volunteer association, and quite active in community service

Involved in sports

I still have not taken my SATs but I am working hard to do well (above 2000). Plus, I love to write, which makes me very exited about the challenge of writing my essays!

Considering the University of Chicago is not listed as Need Blind for International Students, my questions are:

If I were admitted, would I be eligible for a full Merit Scholarship?
If I were admitted, and I were awarded a scholarship but it does not cover my full tuition, could I still apply to some type of financial aid deducting what my parents can afford to pay? Or does this need to be done during the application process?
Should this situation be mentioned in my application papers?
Would it affect the Admissions Committee decision my financial situation?

I appreciate your honesty because I’d rather know beforehand if I should apply or not.

Thank you for your help!

When does UChicago start sending out EA decisions?

I don’t know if someone has answered this but here goes:

Does UChicago consider SAT Subject Scores?

Thanks!

Hello jojocircus, we will notify EA applicants of their admissions decision in mid December. For all others, please use the thread called “Ask An Admissions Counselor” that is “pinned” to the top of our page on CC!
