@ignatius I think my son was meh on Armageddon Reef. We both very much enjoyed Weber’s early Honor Harrington series, but my son thought they got bogged down in politics and I thought they got bogged down in military hardware. And Honor Harrington is a little too much like the character she is modeled on Horatio Hornblower. Sort of morose and a muddled love life. My son’s theory is that Weber’s books took a turn downhill when his arthritis got so bad he started dictating them. He thinks the self-editing really suffered. I’ll be interested to hear what you think. My kid and I often read the same books, but he has much more patience for a lot of verbiage and super complicated magic systems than I do.
Interestingly I liked the play they adapted from The Curious Incident more than the book.
Just finished JK Rowling’s “Cursed Child.” Am in the middle of “Nine Perfect Strangers” by Lianne Moriarty. Because of this book club, I’m spending more time at the library again. Thanks, Mary and everyone for bringing books back into my life and our home.
Our nearest library just reopened after being closed for a year due to a flood. They removed the old, ruined carpet and replaced it with wood-looking solid surfaces (tile I think). They also made bathrooms handicapped assessable and put a changing table in both the ladies’ and men’s bathrooms. It’s beautiful and now they loan out famous Kamaka ukeleles so folks can try playing on them.
I bought mine on e-bay!! I am looking forward to reading it. None of the 8 libraries in the small towns around us have it. So, it will be another book that I donate after I finish. ( I know that they like that I am in this group. I add to their collection.)
Wow…what an adventure.found this about Oman - new favorite scents to remember
“Jabal Akdar is also reknown for the Damask roses that cover the mountain slopes in large swaths of pink throughout April and May. These Damask rosed are distilled to make Omani rose water – a staple in every Omani household for frangrance, culinary and medicinal purposes.”
Will be my second trek to get lost in time in the aromatic region. This visit will include the Eid al-Fitr Holiday and we are hiding out in the silence of the hills. Our oldest is living/working on his doctoral dissertation in Muscat.
@author, Eid al-Fitr coincided with the first week my son was in Jordan for his junior year abroad. He said the stench and bleating of all the poor sheep being brought to town to be slaughtered was quite something!
Looking forward to joining the June discussion - I didn’t get to A Room With a View so I ended up watching the movie! Really enjoyed it - now I want to read the book
I’m still reading The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne. It’s the first book I picked up after A Room with a View, so I got a chuckle out of this sentence I just read, and had to share:
