A scam? DId I really win a government grant?

The world is getting more and more dangerous.

Clearly a scam, but I don’t understand the issue with Western Union for delivery–the bank and the credit card are obvious. If they wanted to receive a payment from you that you would send by Western Union, I get that.

We got a call at home about a problem with our Windows on our computer. My husband answered it. We said, “We don’t have Windows on our computer. You are obviously lying. Never call us again.” Not sure whether this is really working, but we haven’t had a call of that type since.

Both Western union and bank account information could theoretically be used to wire funds to someone, so I wouldn’t call either of them a giveaway (aside from the obvious sketchiness of asking a random person for this information in the first place, but I digress…)

However, you cannot wire someone money using their credit card number, so whoever devised this scam is clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I got this one! But in my case, I was being rewarded for paying my bills on time, rather than for being a good citizen. Caller had a heavy South Asian accent. I played along for a while to amuse myself, then told him that before I headed over to the Western Union office, I had two questions for him: 1) Why do you think all Americans are stupid?; 2) Does you mother know you’re a thief? Needless to say, the call ended.

@MommaJ If said that too! Unfortunately there are enough stupid Americans to keep these scammers in business.

Ya that’s it paying bills on time. No bankruptcy or criminal record.

There is a guy aimed Derek Trotter who has a website where he provides hilariously outrageous stories of scam-baiting, where he gets these scammers to do outrageous things like carve busts of him and of computers and such. Its a great read!!

And some you tube.

Oh yes, the “you are a witness to a murder” one is a hoot!

@MommaJ, brilliant! I rarely answered my phone if I don’t recognize the number, but if I ever receive one of those scam calls, I want to use your line!
