A strange problem - need to drop a course for higher W'GPA

I need to be clearer- by ranking I meant the contest for val/sal. As far as a student’s reported GPA, it includes everything (including PE, etc.)

This whole thing is the reason I’m very happy our school doesn’t rank! The only honors at graduation go to those rare students who have straight A’s (not including PE), not who has the highest weighted GPA. The ONLY ranking here is for ELC (UC) computations. It seems that most of the colleges my daughter is looking at recompute GPA anyway.

My son graduated 8th in a class of 640 or so. the differences in the ranking were tiny, in some cases .01 (on a scale of 0 to 110 weighted.) Our school weighted APs the same as honors which was too bad for my son who took more APs than most. He lost points on Latin despite stellar grades, because of not having an honors Latin 3. But the truth is he lost most of those points by not trying as hard as he could have in English. Oh well. Ranking, not ranking they all have disadvantages. I went to a school that didn’t rank - I’m pretty sure that they told described more than 5% of us in the top 5% of the class on the GC forms.

I think it’s worth asking if adjustments could be made, since the OP child seems like a special case, but I wouldn’t push it.

um, in the grand scheme of life, does being 8th instead of 6th make a big difference?

you know, after grad day, nobody cares

Oh I didn’t think 8 vs 6 made and difference, but being 1 or 2 absolutely makes a difference.

Robinhood, I’m still not sure if I understand, but I can tell you of my DD situation. She took an online math class after sophmore year after realizing she was not on track to have AP calculus as senior. She had filled up her schedule in 9 and 10 with 4 years of Latin (block scheduling) and not enough math. As a result of the “extra” online class, at the end of grade 11, she had 25 credits as opposed to 24 for the other 660 juniors. The online class was an A, however being unweighted it dropped her class ranking from 3rd to 16th! I went to GC wanting to remove the “A” (they laughed at me) but they said absolutely it could not be done. I don’t feel as if we were trying to “game” either, I just wanted her put on the same playing field credit wise with the others but to no avail! I feel your frustration. To make it worse, when I went to ask them to remove the “A”, the GC called other counselor’s in and they just thought it was the funniest thing ever! I didn’t!!!

As an inpartial reader the following is why these attempts appear to me to be “gaming” attempts even if it is unintentinal. To me in these situations if the parents were being consistent about “fairness” in grading they would also go to the same lengths to remove classes/grades from their childs records where the result would be that the GPA would go down and the class rank woudl get worse … but the “unfairness” always seems to show up when it hurts someone’s child and not when it helps them. If you truely believe you would put in the same effort to fight the “unfair” situation if the result would hurt your child’s GPA then I apologize and remove my comments on attempts at gaming.

I do not understand how people find out where they are ranked. Do the GCs tell you? Our school won’t tell- people find out at the very end when the val/sals are announced. Even then, students do not know rankings below that, but can sort of figure them out by looking at the naviance graphs. The school submits a scattergram of all students in it’s secondary school report- but parents and students aren’t allowed to see it.
I guess this is a related question- do students/parents at other schools get to look at the secondary report?

doubleplay, we have online access to real time grade input of classes, attendance issues as well as your students transcript and it shows ranking on it. Obviously you can only see these things for your child.
