A tiny rant about "Cali" directed at noone on this board in particular but included to be helpful

Funny thread (nice way to start the weekend)
Puzzled with Cali (why not CA)
Raised eyebrow to other terms for San Francisco

Only read the first couple pages & this one … brings to mind how geographical usage dates one…

Cali is very alien to me. SoCal brings to mind Southern California Edison

Childhood & Adolescence in Santa Monica… remember when 3rd St was transformed & still call that transformation The Mall, not The Promenade…Missed the switch from freeway names to numbers … San Diego Fwy, Santa Monica Fwy, etc … so, not certain … is that the 5 & 10?

And, @CaliDad2020… Cal Worthington, wow! He’s still around?

But this thread isn’t about what should be, but what is. If people are saying it, they are saying it. Language evolves.

I also dislike it when some call California, “Cali”. Ugh.

Who started this?

Re looking forward #233: In part of the state, it is Wi-scon-sin.

Cal Worthington’s gone. Remember how "his dog, Spot " was rarely a dog?

Old 3rd St was great.

So much for my tattoo fix…

I could keep I (heart) Cali and learn to speak Colombian.

“Go see Cal, go see Cal, go see Cal!”

Yep, Cal was on during all the Sat AM cartoons!

Wow, bringing back memories…those Cal Worthington commercials with his dog spot and spending weekends at the 3rd St mall with friends before it was converted. Can’t recall the name of the movie theater but we’d go to double features… Ah, those were the days!

LA – “ellay” – native here! The term SoCal has taken over: SoCal Honda dealers, SoCal Edison, SoCal Gas…

Yes on the 5, the four level, the 101…

The first time I saw “Cali” was here on CC and I only joined just a few years ago. ((shudder))

I used to work in the 3rd Street mall in the 80s, across from Vidal Sassoon school. I hear the farmers’ market is still there on Wednesdays!

I recently saw Cal Worthington Jr doing the commercials!

Thanks for the information! We’re moving to California this summer! Don’t want to offend our new neighbors!

@collage1 - Could that have been the Criterion?

@Happy2Help - the Farmers’ Market is extraordinary! If I’m lucky enough to be visiting family in Santa Monica on a Wednesday, I go & it’s one of the few times I can imagine wishing that were a weekly chore. Whenever, New York City dwellers go on & on about the Green Markets, particularly the Union Sq market, I silently roll my eyes thinking “you have no idea what a farmers market can be!”

And, I share those Cal Worthington memories. Next time I’m in Southern California I’ll look look for Cal Jr doing a commercial.

To those with ties to California, I’m curious

Any comments about Surfer language or Valley speak, or any other Californian language shorthand

The first time that I heard Cali was when my daughter came home after her first semester at a school in NY. BTW, we’re from SD and it’s fascinating that we use “the 805” and “the 56” w/o even thinking about it. It’s like it’s in our blood.

Question, why does the 405 called the San Diego freeway? It terminates in Irvine.

Take the 101 to the 5…cross over immediately to the 164 (I don’t drive freeways but if you do know that a person does drive you never say take the Ventura Fwy and exit…Ok…just saw 2018dad…we are cross posting.

The vahlee speak is an annoying whine. And it sounds like the speaker is stupid. They aren’t…stupid that is. The Beach Boys gave us the woodie and more.

I blame California for giving us the hated Vocal Fry so I’m going to start using Cali with abandon as payback. >:)

@doschicos as a native Californian I’m ok with that as we in this great state have bigger problems…like voting out our idiot leadership (if you want to call it that). :expressionless:

@ManhattanBoro, yes, I do remember the Criterion–that must be the theater!

I was just folding laundry and came across a t-shirt given to my daughter by her b/f as a gift from his trip to CA. So I had to stop by again and post!

The shirt is similar to this: https://www.californiarepublicclothes.com/collections/womens-t-shirts/products/cali-bear-logo-ladies-t-shirt-1?variant=16846768961

And the above link is from a native California store. And it occurred to me, I’ve seen “Cali” in many retail stores. This is probably a big part of the reason it’s popular (aside from all the song lyrics out there).
