the list is great. My second son will be using it for his dorm needs when its time for him to go. My first son is such a minimalist (cuz he loses everything) will have to use a “pared down” list.

great list. im gonna print it out and use it as a checklist.

My God,so many!

Small one gallon humidifier makes the dry winter heat more comfortable.

eye drops…

Duct Tape – for keeping hospital corners taught

Brasso – for polishing buckles

sewing kit…
u dont want ur shirts missing a button in the middle…
ziplock bags - if u buy veggies u can use ziplocks to keep it fresh in the freezer

I bought a bunch of deep pink towels already, and I’m definitely going to have to go back and buy some white ones now! This is a great idea, especially for people like me who absolutely CAN NOT use the same towel twice. I’m just weird like that.

I brought a computer, toothbrush, bedsheets, and a suitcase full of clothes.

I’m still alive.

haha, talk about packing light! I hear it is better to do that, then pick up what you need once you are there.

note: before bringing a sewing kit to college, learn how to sew.

**I think many people who have complained about the abundance of items listed are taking the list at its literal subject heading “What to Bring.”

A whole lot of confusion would have been avoided if the original poster had titled the list “A to Z: What You Will/Might Need in College.”

Then again, most people understood that to be its general meaning in the first place. The posters saying “All I brought was… and I survived” or “I can’t pack that much…” haven’t quite understood the intent of the original post, I think… Most people did, though.**

I am in the process of copying and pasting the items that apply to me (most of them) on the list and organizing them into small lists—‘furniture, storage, ect,’ ‘toiletries, health, etc,’ ‘entertainment’ and so on

IMHO, the best brand of pencils are Dixon Ticonderoga. Smooth writing, great eraser that doesn’t just smudge. Best brand of pens would be the classic Papermates. :)

Is computer required in college?

Not at most colleges. You can go to the computer labs and/or library to use a computer. There should be at least one place (at most colleges I have heard of) that is open 24 hours for your all-night papers. It would definitely be easier if you had one of your own, but it should not be required. Do you know which college you are going to?

UCB hope so…

I would recommend asking students who attend the college (maybe on the UCB thread)

However, UCB probably has a lot of nice student computers located all over the campus.

thanks anyway. perhaps I won’t need it…

endrotting: We have recently visited a several colleges and most have said that they are requiring entering freshmen to have laptops. Some will let the kids use a desktop.
