I’ve read it recently as well but loved it! Good choice!
I thought about vetoing The Other Black Girl as a close friend gave it a solid thumbs-down while reading it. I peeked and its Goodreads rating is on the low end. I waited to see how things played out. I’d have read it but happy it wasn’t picked.
I’m looking forward to Remarkably Bright Creatures and to @silverlady who continued to suggest it. Glad you did.
Thanks for your suggestion of A Complicated Kindness. It sounds good.
Looking forward to Remarkably Bright Creatures - I hear good things about it.
I am so thrilled that this book was chosen. My girlfriend sent it to me and I have been hoping that it would finally be picked. I have had to purchase the last few books. (Actually, the last book that my library had was Peyton Place.) They did get Horse but it was after we read it. Such is life in a small town with a dismal library!!!. I do plan on giving Remarkably Bright Creatures to the library after our discussion is finished. So happy!!!
I have ebook holds with both the city and county library systems, and a hard copy hold with the city. Something will come through!
@silverlady: In my state, you can order any book in any library around the state with your library card. It’s called an interlibrary loan. See if your library has such a thing.
My library also subscribes to Hoopla, which allows a certain number of instant borrows per month. I’m looking at mine and see both the ebook and audio versions available. Wish I could gift them to someone here!
Mine has the Hoopla version available as well. There’s a waiting list for Kindle and hard copies.
Our state does that too. Often times the books that are suggested are not even in any library or only one or two libraries have them. It also takes about 4 weeks to get. It is pathetic. Some times, I will have the librarian order a new book and I will pay for it, providing I get to read it first. Actually, the price that the library pays is pretty inexpensive. $16 to $18 a book and it already has the plastic cover on it. I usually have them get 5 - 10 books a year that way.
Yay me! I finished A Town Like Alice yesterday afternoon. I loved the last chapter. Is it possible that Noel Strachan is my favorite character? Maybe. I had tears in my eyes as I read the ending.
I had so anticipated the book that perhaps disappointment was inevitable. I liked it -enough - but it didn’t grab my attention. The impetus to pick it back up and fit in a chapter or two just wasn’t there. I don’t consider it a poor choice though. I enjoyed seeing how most of you really liked the book and I’m glad I read it.
Anyway, I started Remarkably Bright Creatures already and will be with you April 1.
As alway, many thanks to @Mary13.
Interim reading:
The Mostly True Story of Tanner and Louise - Colleen Oakley (IRL Book Club)
Random in Death - J. D. Robb (On its way to me soon - library)
and the following two books have been hanging around way too long. I need to get to them.
The Angel of Crows - Katherine Addison
The Ink Black Heart - Robert Galbraith
What are you reading?
I just finished Hello Beautiful and have Witch of Wild Things as a recommended vacation read by my daughter.
On my hold list are also:
You Are Here - Karin Lin Greenberg
A Marvelous Light by Freya Marske
Wolfsong - TJ Klune
Royal Holiday - Jasmine Guillory
and two old Ann Patchett books - State of Wonder and Commonwealth.
@momofboiler1, we read State of Wonder in 2011 and had a great disussion. Here’s the link, but don’t read anything until after you’ve finished the book. Too many spoilers and it’s definitely a story with twists and turns that you won’t want to know about in advance: State of Wonder October CC Book Club Selection
I’ve read the book a couple of times and the last few sentences always get to me.
I was glad Noel got a chance to have an extended stay with Jean and Joe, and that they asked him to make his permanent home with them. It made sense that he said no, but it was nice that they put it out there.
I’m reading The Song of the Cell for another book club. I find I’m having to force myself. Can’t wait until I finish it and I can go on to something more compelling.
I’ve read State of Wonder and Commonwealth.
I have A Marvellous Light on my bulging TBR list and have now added Witch of Wild Things to it.
I just finished The Bride Test by Helen Hoang part of my library’s Reading Challenge - February was a romance with Asian characters. I thought issues around autism and around class ended up really being more important than the fact that the characters were Asian. Not a problem just an observation. This is the first time I’ve read a book and thought the author’s note was the best part!
My DIL(who is from Hong Kong) suggested a bunch of books that could be romances with Asian characters which I want to try. I’ve got The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna and The Dragon’s Promise by Elizabeth Lim on my bedside table.
Also just finished Cynthia Voigt’s The Book of Lost Things - Mister Max #1. It’s a fun mystery for older kids, but not quite a YA. It’s pretty far fetched, but if you are willing to suspend your disbelief at the basic premise, it’s fun. I’ll go ahead and read the sequels because the overarching story isn’t over and also Cynthia Voigt is an author I trust. I fell in love with her Tillerman family books back when they first came out in the 1980s, enjoyed the Kingdom fantasy series and then she wrote a bunch of stuff for much younger readers and I didn’t realize she was still writing the occasional YA or even adult book, so I’m going to go looking for more of her stuff.
Finally I’m still working away at The Sound of the Wind which is perfect since we are going to Spain in April. I’m looking forward to seeing the places described in Barcelona.
If anyone has any suggestions for Spain related reading - I’d love suggestions!
Well, The Shadow of the Wind is the first of four in The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series. I followed it with The Angel’s Game; I couldn’t sleep with that one beside me at night. I meant to continue the series but never got around to doing so.
I liked The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys. Technically YA, I guess, but still.
I have no problem reading books labeled YA. My copy of Shadow of the Wind has a YA sticker!
