OK, now I’m more confused. That link says that income is the AGI (plus any tax exempt interest) from line 37 of the 1040. But I’m self employed, so my line 37 reflects about $10k worth of deductions for self-employed insurance – so my current line 37 puts me in a subsidy-eligible category. Without that deduction, my income is outside the subsidy-eligiible level – so that makes a pretty big difference to me. But it kind of sounds like double-dipping for me to be able to subtract out my health insurance costs to figure the subsidy? Surely that can’t be true… is the IRS going to come up with one of those hopelessly complicated worksheets for us self-employed taxpayers?

There is some weird stuff in the calculations.

If you make a dollar over the income line, you can lose a subsidy worth thousands.

I dont know how you are going to come out calmom, but it might work out for you.

I can see that. That’s why it’s particularly important for me to know where I stand as self-employed person. Or probably for anyone who has any level of control over their income – but obviously we self-employed can make decisions in December related to our expenses and outstanding billing that impact our reportable income for the year. Normally that isn’t going to make much of a difference, but with the possible subsidy thrown into the mix – it could be quite significant.

dstark: Thanks for the link. It’s the closest to something like an answer I’ve seen.

It’s not clear for small businesses either. We can put our health care costs on either the business side or the personal side. It looks like putting it on the business side with a resulting lower line 37 would be beneficial.

Weird.
