Here is a comparison of SAT scores 1964 versus 2006. The 1964 scores were recentered using a conversion table on the web. The year 1964 was before baby boomers entered college (1963 data). Two years later, in the 1966 Barrons Profiles of American Colleges, after the first freshmen class of baby boomers, the SATs had already jumped about 50 points. These are the only schools for which I had good data.</p>

<p>Rice’s 1964 figures are even somewhat more interesting than the fact it did not charge tuition. Before entry class of 1965, Rice’s charter required tuition free for Texas residents, and non-whites could not be admitted. The trustees of Rice who wanted to get rid of both rules initiated a lawsuit in late 1963 to change those rules and the ruling doing so came in 1964. Besides no tution, another factor that kept the admission rate low for entry in 1964 is that a number of non-whites applied in 1963 for 1964 admission to help provide evience for the lawsuit and they were, of course, rejected.</p>
<p>Also, the comment above that only the super brains or rich people went to college in 1964 is simply not true. Most that applied to college were neither. The percentage of high school students that applied to college was lower than today but college was still considered a way to a better life (and a prime way to avoid the draft). Moreover, cost was fairly reasonable at many colleges, e.g., at many state universities, the total for tuition and room & board for a year was in the $800 to $1500 range.</p>

<p>I figured out the midpoints for the 2006 SATs by adding the 25th and 75th percentiles from US News and then dividing by two. I did this separately for the math and verbal, then added the math and verbal midpoints to get the midpoint for the total SAT. I also had to do this for a few of the 1964 SAT scores but most of the 1964 data was already reported as average SAT scores, not percentile ranges.</p>
