We’ve rented a house for a week in Montauk starting next weekend. I did actually visit and look at the Surf Club. We toured the 1 BR. It’s small – and if was just me and H would have been our first choice. I assumed the two BR were equally small and with the boys it was just too small. But … the unit we toured was more than adequate for medium sized people that get along with each other! And I thought the location was great – on the water, just outside the village. How can you beat it?

If you can, wait until the end of September. The room rates and the crowds become less of a problem and the water is still warm enough for swimming. I prefer Montauk over the Hampton towns.

You sound concerned about the quality of the accommodations. That is a very valid concern. Most of the places - even those with high rates - look like cheap hotels. Of course, the brochures and webshots always look a lot better. Food is another issue. Many of the know places have long wait times and mediocre food. For many years, the early bird special at the Shagwong Tavern was very good food at a modest price. Unfortunately, I do not know if that is still true. My last trip was over a year ago and the food at the Shagwong was poor. Maybe it was just an off night. I would give it one more try. Failing that you might be better off to get a kitchenette and cook your own food.

cnp55,
Thanks for the update on the Surf Club. I can understand that with a family that it is probably worthwhile to rent a house for the week.
edad,
I am concerned about the accommodations. This would be a short trip - maybe 2-3 nights at the most and probably mid-week, but even for that limited amount of time, I’m still very picky. I did some more research and found the Inn at Greenport(an upscale boutique property) but it’s in the North Fork and the Inn at Quogue.

Actually, I just checked the reviews on Trip Advisor for the Inn at Quogue, and they’re not very favorable.

We used to stay at the Southampton Inn before we bought our own place in Quogue. We liked the location in town and it’s easy to drive to the beach. However, this was may years ago…you would have to check into it now. There aren’t that many nice places to stay in the Hamptons. Gurneys Inn in Montauk was popular back then and there was a place called the Latch Key Inn in Southampton also.

I’m still looking into going to the Hamptons, and I was just wondering if anyone has any recent feedback of places to stay.
