Accuracy of Cost of Attendance (COA) Figures

I have no idea what either of my kids spent on misc expenses. They were expected to earn this money themselves. We did give them occasional cash gifts, but most discretionary spending was done via their earnings. My kids might have spent a lot, but this didn’t add to our costs to send them to college. They both had really good college jobs!

I only know because D20’s checking account is linked to mine, so I can see the spending. All misc spending (aside from medical copays and rx costs) are her responsibility. They are funded by earnings from her summer job and the $20/hr on campus job she has.

That’s what mine did too. Both had jobs that paid $15 an hour, and one graduated in 2007, and the other in 2010. Good money for that period of time!

My D was also responsible for all her miscellaneous spending in college. First year was funded by her HS summer jobs and then after that she always had some kind of low key, on campus job. She was a tutor, worked in a lab, and was as a course grader. Tutoring was the most lucrative. (She saved/invested all her internship and co-op money and didn’t touch those earnings.)
