je-ne-sais-quoi that is VERY SCARY!!! Thank you for the heads up! I would not have let him go on it in September because I was worried about his transition to college etc…, but he has transitioned well and seems to have a good support system there. It is only an hour away and I will be keeping a very close eye on him. I thought about waiting until summer, but then with the sun-sensitivity I thought it would be better to do it in the winter.

This product is probably too mild for severe acne, but have any of you tried a device called Clarisonic? It is suppose to sonically clean the pores. I am debating about getting it for dd who struggles with acne but always wants to use natural products (which aren’t always successful).

It seems like I tell people this about every six months. Try zinc oxide ointment. Really. It cleared up my acne (back in the 70s, when there wasn’t anything); it cleared up my son’s acne; it cleared up my husband’s back acne (which was truly disgusting). it cleared up many a former student’s acne. It’s cheap, it’s non-prescription, it has NO side effects. You can buy it in the baby products section; it’s also used to clear up diaper rash.

The catch: well, it’s a white paste. Put it on at night, and make sure to rub it off thoroughly in the morning.

I will try and get her to try zinc oxide. Is that the stuff that life guards use to put on their noses so they wouldn’t get sunburn?

Yes, zinc oxide is what lifeguards and sailors used to wear.

Oh, and if the zinc oxide is going to work, you should see results in about a week. You do have to use it all over the acne areas, not just on the specific zits.

My d had really bad acne, mostly on her face. We tried a bunch of products (including Proactiv and all the benzo-strippers), which only dried out her skin. She swims, so adding drying products just took things from bad to worse.

Then we finally found Outer Peace from Aveda. A spa facialist recommended them. There is a tremendous difference in her skin when D uses the products regularly (which she doesn’t always have time for…or so she says!) They are very gentle products that combat the redness and the skin sensitivity that can make a bad problem look even worse. They smell good, leave the skin clean but not stripped – which only makes the skin produce more oil – and used in concert really changes her appearance for the better. I just wish she’d found it before the small scars appeared.

Novelista,
Some of those small scars will probably improve with time. My D had some small pitting from her very bad outbreaks but she has had pretty clear skin now for about two years and I’ve noticed that the scarring is barely visible. Part of the improvement may be due to the fact that she is still on a Retin A product and that exfoliates the layers.

Laser is also an option if the scars don’t improve. Good luck. It can be such a heartbreaking problem for kids and the impact of it is often underestimated.

My DD suffered from acne since she was 13. The doctor wanted to put her on Accutane because the acne was severe enuogh but she was having none of that. She decided she would rather suffer with acne. We struggled to find something that would work for her. Retin A worked somewhat but it would always come back with a vengence.
Then one day I read an article about how some people were sensitive to the hormones in milk. After she cut out all milk producks for a month her skin was much clearer and it continued to get better. She still has occational break outs but nothing like what she lived with for the last five years.
You may want to try this, it can’t hurt.

wildhorse I have read that and we tried that, and were about 2 weeks in when we saw the dermatologist who said “food has nothing to do with it”. I still believe it but once my son heard the derm say he didn’t he went back on milk. It was very hard for my son to do since he loves ice cream and cheese, etc… I also think the sugar has something to do with it too, but can’t get him to cooperate there either.

I went to doctor for acne two months ago, she gave me Triaz washing cloth and OTC Panoxyl which can be use on face and body and costs only 10 dollars. Triaz is good too and you can call the company (google the company) for 50 dollars coupon.
