ACT Essay Score Based on Length?

Well, first time I took the new ACT I only scored a 9 on the essay…it was only a/b two pages.

The second time I wrote about 4 pages and received an 11.

I think my quality of writing is pretty consistent, so yeah, I’d say length is a big factor.

On the SAT, on the other hand, I scored a 12 and only had 2 pages written.

I agree that the essay shouldn’t be used really…it’s a bit pointless since you have to be so formulaic and are given such a short amount of time. Still, I really wish they’d consider the writing section of the SAT…it’s less subjective.

I’m confused, the essay is scored out of 12? In the REAL ACT book the essays are scored out of 6. Am I missing something here?

Well two graders read your essay. So a six would be the max score of one grader. Then the other grader gives you a score out of six. Combined you get a score out of 12.
