Additional Essay: What Did You Guys Write About?

my essay was pretty run-of-the-mill, about learning to drive and conversations in the car.

mine was about being a minority(in china ofc) and how i gradually became aware of that identity and the responsibilities that came along with that identity.
yeah oh and umm i wrote that it was my grandpa who inspired me to realize who i am and what i should do…

I did my own take on the whole “write about a challenge/obstacle you have overcome” thing… it was about getting rejected from a performance group, and then auditioning for something else with the same director and working my butt off/beating the odds/being an underdog and making it. I framed it with a thing about being a Leap Year baby (it makes sense in context, I promise). And the real twist? It was written - mostly, anyway - as a script.

That wasn’t a plan or a gimmick or anything… it just kind of happened.

Since I fully expect to be rejected, hopefully I at least gave the adcom something interesting to read. :)

starsshortie37, my essay is almost the same as yours! Only I talked about how a specific painter influenced me.

How important do you guys think essays really are? Like I know everyone says they are…but yeaaah.

well i’ve heard that if u have decent SAT and sub test scores, then the essays r like really important… once u past the score line then it all comes down to ur essays(and ofc other app stuff)
scores+good essays(plus other app stuff) and u r in, if ur essays suck then well big rejection coming

Hmm…I am not so sure essays are that critical. After scores, your ECs are essentially your lifeline into Yale. Ya, they look at your essays too, but you don’t have to channel the writing prowess of Charles Dickens. All your essays need to do is succinctly and eloquently convey who you are. I mean just using common sense, what should colleges weight more, the awards and ECs you have spent years working on or the essays you wrote in a couple days?

i wrote about getting my tattoo illegally

how one of my favorite anime characters from when i was 8 years old helped me make friends and shape who i am today

Well, Rt, I’ve spent six months on my essays. So it’s fair for them to judge me.

I wrote about why I want to study want to I want to study, and what exactly I want to do with it and why… kind of my philosophy on it (environmental engineering).

I wrote about my work experience (which is quite unusual).

When I look at the cool and interesting topics you’ve all written about, I feel really humbled =) My essays were pretty basic… and lame I guess; I wrote about a story mum told me when I was a kid… Another was about how a teacher who influenced me. I didn’t have anyone to check my essays (intl student with no support/peers applying abroad and I don’t really trust CC), so my stuff’s pretty rough. Oh well, I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Romanticism: What work experience?

I wrote about why I love to read so much, and how my favorite authors influence my writing. It sort of tied back into my Common App essay, which was mainly about writing.

I wrote about spending time with my father and why it makes me who I am.

I wrote about Hot Wheels, NCAA Football 2006, and citizen journalism.

i wrote about losing a beauty pageant. and how i though everything i wanted to do depended upon winning that title.

i guess its not really the topic, more the execution and message that comes across.
it was really personal… and somewhat embarrassing to discuss with other people.

I wrote about my experiences moving as a child (finishing elementary school in 3 different states) and how it has taught me that being the “new girl” is honestly one of the most wonderful experiences someone could have/ how it has largely shaped my extroverted personality. Do you think that’s too generic though? a lot of people seem to write about moving…

No cocochanel101 [by the way, lovee the username :P], I don’t think that’s too generic. No matter how many people write about travelling, your story is going to be different from everyone else’s. Chill. :)
