Advice for a Costco Newbie

Loaded up on plain, full fat Chobani yogurt in big tubs.

Also bought 2 laceleaf Japanese maples ?. These suckers grow faster than money in the bank! In about 10 years, my $20 Costco maple grew into a beautiful $1,000 tree. The guy that replaced a failed windowpane in House1 said I would have easily got that much if I called a landscaper because similar mature trees sell for more than $3,000. It was truly gorgeous. So fingers crossed for these two that they would turn into similar beauties. No, my landscaping is not for sale.

Bought 2.5 pounds of spinach @$4 and rotisserie chicken @$4.99. It was a quick and easy dinner of steamed spinach & chicken plus leftovers for more meals.

Also bought turkey jerky with no preservatives—big 14+ oz bag for $10 (high protein munchies for traveling).

I’ve been shopping at Costco for years, for the last 18 at a store 45 minutes away, but now we have one within 15 minutes so I go more often. We’re empty nesters so it’s not the large quantities or oversize food items that keep me coming back. It’s the quality of the products, the excellent return policy, their company model that includes paying workers fair wages and providing benefits and their sustainability policies. We bought our kitchen floor through them four years ago. It was a good deal and I loved the cash back bonus.https://www.costco.com/sustainability-introduction.html

One of my favorite must-buys is the packs of cold left-over rotisserie chicken. They sell them in either halves -3 halves or multiple legs and the cost is less than the already good deal rotisserie chicken. Since my husband and I can never eat a whole rotisserie chicken, it’s great. I put a dinner size portions in quart size freezer bags and/or use the rest to make homemade wet dog food for my dog. Lately we’ve been taking advantage of the low price guarantee, which I didn’t even know they did. My daughter bought something at Costco and the next week it went on sale, she went to the front desk and told them and they gave her a cash card with the difference! She did that for two other items later. Another reason to buy stuff when you see it, even if it’s not on sale!

Most stores do that, have done for years. It stops returns and re buys. The queue in my local Costco customer service desk is often to the door through, that isn’t good CS, There should be a way of doing that easily, especially for their branded visa card users. One of my ccards has a service where they watch for price cuts, can’t say I have used it at all (not Costco visa)

One of the advantages at shopping at a newer Costco is that it’s hardly ever crowded. I can get through the line in ten minutes max. Weekends are worse, but still better than any other Costco I’ve shopped at. Last year we shopped at a Costco in the San Diego area and had to park literally a 1/4 mile away and wait at least 30 minutes in line. The newness means that returns are also really quick. I like not having to explain why I’m returning it and makes me more apt to buy.

We’ve had that issue here starting around the Christmas shopping season. At first I thought it had something to do with Christmas shopping, then with tourist season but most of our tourists have gone home now and the line is still there. Not quite as long as it was, but sucky nonetheless. I like Costco and luckily don’t have to return things often, but I agree that line is really poor customer service and I dread the few times I’ve had to get in it.

Decided to be calorie-mindful and bought 2 little Trpophy cupcakes for us to celebrate Mr.'s birthday. $10 included tax. They were simply OK. I really wish I would have bought a whole sheet cake at Costco for not much more $! Their cake is the best, and the coworkers would have appreciated the leftovers tomorrow!

I travel a lot for business and personal and it is VERY rare that COSTCO is not the cheapest for car rental- and completely able to cancel. I also keep checking the rates right up to the day before travel and often can rebook at a lower rate. I always check Southwest and the rental car company websites (with discount coupons) and always wind up with COSTCO.

I wish Costco car rental worked with Hertz, but unless something had changed, they don’t.

Definitely shop around, though. I mentioned back many pages checking Costco for a car rental for our graduation trip last month and the rate we got through our USAA insurance was 45% cheaper than Costco.

Regarding Costco car rental, mess around with pickup times also. As an example, we are renting in September in Jackson Hole. To pick up the car at 1 would have been 613. To pick it up at 12:30 was 497. Something similar happened in Denver one year. A half an hour made a huge difference in price. It may not always be the case, but it’s worth checking. And definitely recheck prices. Our first reservation, made in maybe March, we were going to be paying close to 700. All quotes are for small SUV.

I would say that in my pretty extensive experience, it’s impossible to beat Autoslash for car rental pricing. It includes USAA and Costco in its lookups.

One little complaint about using Autoslash itself to pay for the rental - once you start your contract, the amount you paid upfront becomes non-refundable. This may be true with all Prepaids, not sure. I found this out the hard way - I returned a car early by one day, hustled out to the airport 4 hours early to make the time limit, but bam, no credit back. Oh well…

^^ That is a huge dealbreaker. What’s so good about COSTCO (and most others) is that they are fully cancellable. With the way the rates change and travel plans can change, who wants to lock into a car that can’t be changed? I used to do Priceline a lot (where you bid for a price) but only if there was almost no chance that my trip would change in any way.

I had cancellable reservations on Autoslash & it only took them a few days to credit the refund.

I am pretty sure that you can choose between cancellable and non-cancellable reservations on autoslash, with the latter being less expensive. For me, the issue is that I am enrolled in Avis Preferred, Hertz #1 Gold (or whatever it is called), and the equivalent programs with the other companies where I walk out and pick the car and don’t have to wait in line. I believe that can go back and put your loyalty number in after reserving on Autoslash, but in some cases (Hertz or Avis), they don’t have a car ready for you and need you to wait in line. But, then again this week, my assistant reserved a car directly from Avis to be picked up at SFO. Apparently ,the rate for Premium cars was $2 more for the three day period than for whatever the standard car was. So my assistant reserved premium. When I got there, ther ewas no car because they didn’t have a premium car but just then a car rolled in which they said was premium – it was a Chevy Impala but had leather seats, so I guess it was premium. At least I didn’t have to do paperwork. I think it was Avis or Hertz in Calgary that I reserved through Autoslash and had to wait in line for about an hour. I do so much traveling that I am allergic to unnecessary wais.

i just reserved Avis through Costco and put in my #. The car reservation showed up in my Avis app.

I finally broke down and got the Costco Visa. My husband and I both need new iPads, and the warranty from Costco is great, plus we save $30 on each iPad. I haven’t decided if I should upgrade to executive membership or not, because I really don’t shop there that often.

We just cashed in our $400 EM rebate check (that comes on top of the Visa rebate). Not bad. We shop Costco a lot

I was at COSTCO Headquarters for a meeting last week and learned a lot about the company. It’s a good operation and they treat their people well. I like to do business with companies like that.
