Close to 80%. For a while, Costco was the closest grocery store for us, so we would regularly swing by just to pick up some milk. Now, we have options nearby, but the prices are about 30% higher. Naturally, we keep driving to Costco… it only takes 10 min.
There is no Costco closer than about a 45 minute drive from here. So we aren’t members.
I have thought about getting our kids memberships, as both wear glasses/contacts and the prices are supposed to be decent. At one point, I did compare those to BJs (where we are members) and the prices were about the same for contacts.
Costco definitely has the variety of items, and their return policy is excellent. But I just can’t see joining when it’s 45 minutes away, and we are shopping for…two. We get our bulk stuff at BJs…and do a lot of our other shopping at Aldi.
No BJ or Aldi here, and Costco ate Sam’s a while ago. Lol. There is a gawdawful grocery store that supposedly sells stuff in bulk and cheap, but we did not like the quality of what was there. So Costco all the way here. We supplement it with TJ’s and small local chains.
@preppedparent - “@TiggerDad, please don’t propagate Asian stereotypes on a forum that talks about College Admissions. Everyone buys everything big at Costco because they only sell big. And Asians don’t just buy rice, they buy books, cheese, crab legs, coats, and all kinds of stuff.”
Well, you lost me. I thought I only talked about what I purchase from Costco (and Sam’s), and now all of a sudden I’m not to “propagate Asian stereotypes on a forum that talks about College Admissions”??? I don’t know what you’ve been smoking lately, but I thought this thread was about Costco, so I don’t know where your reference to “College Admissions” have anything to do with particular thread??? I’ve had some strange responses to my posts but this one completely lost me… And, oh, I as an Asian buy “cheese, crab legs, coats, and all kinds of stuff,” LOL.
Since Costco is only a 5 minute drive from our home, we go there often and buy all sorts of things but fewer groceries since there are only 2 of us at home.
To @TiggerDad’s defense, he has posted here multiple times and mentioned many products other than rice.
One of my problems is space. As a single person in an apartment, I just don’t have room for a dozen cans of stock or bales of TP.
For those of us fortunate to live close, swinging by Costco on the way home from work is little more work than swinging by Safeway (Kroger, Albertsons, whatever your neighborhood store is) except you get about 1000 more steps in picking up milk, tortillas and Kleenex than at your average store!
@doschicos – Thank you! I’ll never mention “rice” again, OMG! :))
Unless you’re talking about the school in Houston lol
We live over 2 hours away. Groceries maybe 10 %. TVs, hearing aides, glasses, contacts 100%.
I’ll say about 90% of our groceries comes from either Costco or Sam’s. About 2% comes from a local Safeway or King Sooper and the rest 8% comes from an H-Mart about an hour drive away.
Lol @TiggerDad!
Paraphrasing the line from the movie (my all time favorite!), The Graduate:
“I just want to say one word to you… Just ONE word.”
“Yes Sir.”
“Are you listening?”
“Yes, I am.”
“Rice.”
:))
@TiggerDad - how do you store your rice at home? I would worry about large quantities of anything that buggies might love…
At room temperature. I’ve never had rice go bad on me for months. It’s one of the longest lasting food there is without going bad.
Lol, just getting caught up on this thread and Post #143 gave me a chuckle. I have to disagree with preppedparent and say that I do not know of any Asian who does not keep rice as a staple in their pantry and cook it frequently. It is a stereotype that I find to be true (at least in my experience). You would get razzed if you’re an Asian with no rice in their house. It’s like blasphemy
I grew up with a 20+ cup rice storage/ dispenser similar to this one:
Aroma Housewares ARD-125 Rice Dispenser https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005KJWY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ymHbCbGEPFK8M
If you have it in an airtight container, rice will last a long time. People often make the mistake of leaving the rice in the bag from the store.
Sorry, in HI, rice will end up with bugs in HI if not used up quickly enough, even if you switch it from the bag it was sold in to plastic containers. We purchase an amount we will eat in two months or so and store it in the fridge or freezer.
Ok, back to Costco thread.
We have one Costco within 10 minutes and another within 15, plus the Costco business within 15. I joined waaaaay back, when they were one store and I had an account with the County credit union.
I love the kale salad with shrimp - it’s a week’s worth of lunches. Korean bbq jerky, car batteries, reading glasses in a three-pack, Santa Maria tri tip, kerrygold butter, English coastal cheddar. H buys jeans and shirts (it was always fun at work when it was inadvertently costco shirt day - the engineer’s uniform).
